9th September 2006 - Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 1 Round 8 in Milltown

St. Mary's 0-10 V 2-12 Milltown/Castlemaine

Milltown/Castlemaine inflicted a 9th consecutive defeat on St Marys in the back Round 8 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 1 on Saturday night last. After an even first half which saw the sides go in at the break seven points to four in favour of Milltown/Castlemaine, it was once again St Marys start to the second half that left them down when goals from Derek Twiss and Donal Kelleher sealed the two points for the home side after 35 and 39 minute respectively. St Marys did however managed to put respectability on the score line towards the end of the game thanks to some fine scores from Austin Constable, Ray Keane, Fergal O Connell and Niall O Driscoll and leave the final score St Marys 0-10, Milltown/Castlemaine 2-12.

It took only twenty second for corner forward Derek Twiss to break the deadlock after good build up play from Fionan Kelleher, two minutes later it was James Fitzgerald and Declan O Sullivan who provided the build up but this time Daniel O Sullivan levelled matters. Derek Twiss, Kieran Kelleher (Milltown/Castlemaine) and Niall O Driscoll and Austin Constable (St Marys) exchanged points for their sides after nine minutes before Milltown/Castlemaine added two unanswered points from Donal Kelleher who was cleaning the St Marys defence with ease. Austin Constable pulled one back for the visitors from a 21m free due to a foul on Vinny Moriarty before Donal Kelleher from play and Derek Twiss from a 21m free after a foul on Jeremiah Hayes left the score at the short whistle Milltown/Castlemaine 0-7 St Marys 0-4.

It took only five minutes of the second half for the home side to wrap up the tie after Liam Sheehan pulled off a great save from Damien Murphy, Derek Twiss was left unmarked and he slotted home from the near post to give his side a ten cushion. Donal Kelleher on seven minutes showed his brilliance when he first added an easy point, while in the same minute had a goal chance saved off the line from John M Clifford, but made up for it two minutes later when he netted after a fine piece of individual effort from Kelleher, but with his goal in the bag he didn t stop there and added another point after a great run on ten minutes. After a foul on Timmy O Connor, Ian Twiss added a close free before Austin Constable got his sides first score of the second half after sixteen minutes from long range. Ian Twiss added two more frees after 46 and 49 minutes before the Milltown/Castlemaine bench ordered numerous substitutions and with this St Marys were able to get back into the game and add points from Austin Constable (3), a 21 and 28 metre free and a great long range effort before Adam Quirke assisted Fergal O Connell to his third point of the year and leave the final score in Milltown, Milltown/Castlemaine 2-12 St Marys 0-10.

This was an easy victory for the home side and had players such as Joe Daly in goal, Damien Murphy, William Harmon, Paudie McCarthy, Fionan Kelleher, Ian Twiss, Derek Twiss and Man of the Match Donal Kelleher to thank. St Marys were best served on the night by Adam Quirke, Brian Curran, Vinny Moriarty, and Austin Constable who kicked 6 of his sides 10 points. Milltown/Castlemaine are now safe in Division 1 and still have three though games left in the competition which will all be gearing up towards their AIB County Championship Quarter Final match against Dr. Crokes on the 1st of October, meanwhile St Marys have one final game in the division when they play hosts to Castleisland Desmonds and will then have to concentrate on Renard in the first round of the South Kerry Championship.
