5th May 2006 - County Minor Football League in Con Keating Park

St. Mary's 2-14 V 1-04 Reenard

St. Mary’s minors qualified for the county league semi-finals when they dominated from start to finish against near neighbours Renard in a wet Cahersiveen on Sunday afternoon last on a score line of 2-14 to 1-04. After an edgy first five minutes, both sides missed chances but it was Kevin Kelly from a free who put Renard in front, this was to be the first and last time Renard were to lead for the duration of the game when centre forward Anthony Hutchinson levelled and extended the home sides advantage with two points in two minutes. Paulie Donoghue turned on the style when he pointed a cracking 45m free after a foul on Conor Moran, and Donoghue turned provider a minute later when he sent a low ball to Sean Cournane who turned and pointed to put three between the sides. Two more Kevin Kelly frees helped the Renard side but was to be their last score of the first half while Paulie Donoghue and Sean Cournane added points, and with three minutes left on the clock a combination of passes between Mark McGillicuddy and Paulie Donoghue set Conor Moran up in front of goal one on one with Patrick McGill and Moran buried the ball to the back of the net to give his side a seven point lead. St. Mary’s backs also kept the score at the same as well as a great save from Shane Horgan kept the half time score St. Mary’s 1-08 Renard 0-03. The second half began the same as the first with Vinny Moriarty and Michael O’Shea dominating midfield and another Conor Moran goal, this one came soccer style when he dribble the ball along the ground and buried it to the bottom left hand corner to extend his sides lead. Paulie Donoghue added a close range free while Sean Cournane added his third point after a good ball from Colm Cournane extended the advantage to 13 points with the game approaching the final quarter. Kevin Kelly added his and his sides fourth point, this one from play but this was well cancelled out with points from Sean Cournane, Paulie Donoghue, Micheal O’Shea, and another Paulie Donoghue free before Renard did get a consolation when Tim Dennehy sent a low ball across the face of the goal but only to be redirected to the back of the net by St. Mary’s Colm Cournane for an o.g and leave the final score St. Mary’s 2-14 Renard 1-04. This was a the Minors best performance all year and will take on Skellig Rangers next Friday evening @ 7:00 in Renard and a cracking game is in prospect with the Mary’s out to seek revenge for their defeat earlier in the group stage to the Portmagee side. The game also saw a bad injury on Renards Rory O’Sullivan during the second half and everyone at St. Mary’s wishes him a speedy recovery..
