St. Mary's Junior Games.
08/05/05 COUNTY JUNIOR FOOTBALL
LEAGUE DIVISION 2 SEMI-FINAL. ST. MARY’S 1-13 SPA 1-16.
After a trilling game in which no
team excelled that spanned over 1hr 20mins Spa advanced to the final where
they will meet Austin Stacks for a place in the Junior Division 1 in the
cruellest of circumstances. Despite Spa taking the game into extra time
with a last minute point from Sean Casey, the East Kerry side took a 4
point lead at the interval of extra time, the Mary’s fought back and found
themselves level with time running out where both side must have been
looking to another day out, but with time up, Spa received a 45m free from
which Sean Casey again dropped the ball short and to the top corner of the
goal and saw Spa step forward to the final. The first half saw seven
points exchanged between both sides and largest leading margin being 1
point, Spa got off the mark first when C Flathery pointed despite the
Mary’s having two clear cut chances of points denied beforehand. Adam
Quirke put St. Mary’s on the board for the first of 14 times with a 30m
free before P Cronin the full forward pointed from 25m. Paul O’Connell,
John O’Sullivan, Connie Connor and Adam Quirke (3) all added points for
the Mary’s before the break while C Cronin, P Cronin and Brian Gleeson
equalled for Spa to bring the half time score at 7 points a piece. After
St. Mary’s winning the throw in Declan O’Sullivan set Sean Donal O’Shea up
for the Mary’s to take the lead by the minimum. P Cronin made his last
contribution of a point before he got his marching orders for his second
yellow card while Sean Donal O’Shea (St. Mary’s), Sean Casey (Spa) and D
Cronin (do.) exchanged points before Adam Quirke and John O’Sullivan
pointed in quick succession which seemed to lead to a win for the Mary’s
only that Sean Casey had other things on his mind when a long ball found
him he pointed to bring the game into extra time at 0-12 each. St. Mary’s
failed to produce in the first half of extra time while Spa added an
additional 4 points from Sean Casey (2) and Sean Morris (2). The South
Kerry side had a lot to do in the final 10 minutes but when Vinny Moriarty
and Duirmuid Walsh combined to make Adam Quirke’s point this was a good
start, but better was to come when Sean Donal O’Shea broke the ball to
Vinny Moriarty he levelled with a goal. Then came the heartbreaking moment
for the Mary’s when Sean Casey’s 45m free dropped between three Mary’s men
and snatched the game. St. Mary’s Team and Scorers: Cormac O’Shea,
