McElligott Cup Round 2 V Spa in Spa Lost 0-07 v 2-10

St. Mary’s B Team lined out for the third team in the year against Spa, this time in the McElligott Cup where no joy was to be had in Killarney. After a good first half which saw the visitors trail by a goal, a second half which was one to be forgotten about meant the Mary’s bowed out of the competition in the quarter finals. A Conor Moran 30m point after 25 seconds opened the days proceedings, but a Ronan O’Sullivan point levelled matters 2 minutes later before a Sean Cournane point but two Brendan Doolin frees and an Andrew Regan goal minutes later saw the Mary’s fall behind, despite points from Sean Cournane, Seamus Fitzgerald and Vinny Moriarty the visitors still trailed at the break due to two Spa 45s points from Brendan Doolin meant the half time score was Spa 1-5 St. Mary’s 0-5. The sides exchanged points in the opening minutes of the second half from Sean Cournane, Alan Clifford (St. Mary’s), Brian Darcy and Brendan Doolin (Spa) while the Mary’s failed to add to their tally from here on in, and Spa went on a scoring rampage with points from Ronan O’Sullivan, Brian Darcy, Doolin and Sean Casey while Brendan Doolin was on hand to get his second goal of the evening and leave the final score in Killarney, Spa 2-13 St. Mary’s 0-07. St. Mary’s Team & Scorers: Cormac O’Shea, John Paul Mahony, Brian Curran, Kieran Casey, Colm Cournane, Connie O’Connor, John Donovan, Cathal O’Connell, Fergal O’Connell, Conor Moran (0-1), Vinny Moriarty (0-1), Declan O’Sullivan, Sean Cournane (0-3,1f), Seamus Fitzgerald (0-1,1f), Alan Clifford (0-1). Subs: Sean D O’Shea, Paul O’Donoghue, Paudie Donovan, Craig Hutchinson and Michael O’Shea. Spa Team & Scorers: Andrew O’Sullivan, Brian Devane, Donal Kelly, Cormac Cronin, Conor Riordan, Paul Kelliher, Brian Darcy (0-4), Donal Cremin, Shane Devane, Andrew Regan, Ronan O’Sullivan (0-1), Brendan Doolin (2-5), Sean Casey (0-3), Shane Fenton. Subs: Sean Morris, Cathal Flaherty, Kevin Regan and Jim Morris.

County Junior League Round 1 V Gneeveguilla in Con Keating Park Won 0-10 v 0-08

St. Mary’s juniors got off to a winning start in the County Junior Football League when they scored a two point victory over Killarney side Gneeveguilla last Friday night. St. Mary’s will credit the victory to their second half display and full forward Seamus Fitzgerald who kicked four points, three from frees. While Gneeveguilla were unlucky not to take anything from the game as they battle hard throughout and played the better football in the first half. Gneeveguilla were kept in touch throughout thanks to Jer Moynihan kicking 6 points from 8, 3 from frees. The first half scores came from Vinny Moriarty and Seamus Fitzgerald for St. Mary’s while Gneeveguillas points came from Ger Moynihan and Michael Fleming to leave a half time score 5 points a piece. St. Mary’s played out a lot better second half with scores from Seamus Fitzgerald, Cathal O’Connell and Sean Cournane while Gneeveguilla were too much reliant on Jer Moynihan’s scores as he added two more and the final point from Philip Cremin. Best for the Mary’s on the day were John P Mahony, John Donovan, Cathal O’Connell, Fergal O’Connell and Seamus Fitzgerald while Ger Moynihan and goalkeeper Patrick O’Riordan were the best of an average Gneeveguilla side. St. Mary’s take on Spa next Friday night at 8 O’clock away, Spa were defeated by 2 points this weekend by John Mitchels and a tough game is in prospect.
