1st April 2006 - Cumman Na Bun Scoil Mini 7's in Tralee Scoil Mhuire BNS & St. Josephs GNS History was created on Saturday afternoon last in Tralee when the young footballers of Cahersiveen claimed not one but two County titles in the Cumman Na Bun Scoil Mini 7’s competition. The action got under way at 10 o’clock in Mounthawk when the girls of St. Josephs took to the field and scored three magnificent victories over Cordal, Glencar and An Daingean With these three wins under belt and through to the knock out stages they cheered on Scoil Mhuire Boys National School who came up against a strong Ardfert outfit and were beaten by a single point after a magnificent second half come back. The Cahersiveen boys then had to win their next two games to go through and came up against the Mid-Kerry representatives of Killorglin, after a tight first half Scoil Mhuire finished victors by the minimum, next up was An Daingean, in which Scoil Mhuire had no resistance in disposing of. With both the boys and girls of Cahersiveen now through to the final stages of the competition to be played down the road in Caherslee this was a great feat but what was to come was magnificent. St. Josephs were first up in their semi-final when they were pitted against neighbors and rivals Waterville, this was an exciting game which produced some fantastic displays especially from the Cahersiveen school which was enough to put them through to the final, meanwhile Scoil Mhuire were getting into the swing of things where they played Templenoe/Kenmare on the adjacent pitch. Scoil Mhuire took flight early on and never looked back for a moment and won by a whooping 15 points. With both teams now into the finals, both games were played off quickly as the spectators tried their best to keep their eyes on both games but this was difficult with two nailbiting encounters going on at the same time, St. Josephs had the toughest of the games against Duagh in a very low scoring match which saw them claim a great victory on a scoreline of 2 points to 1. The game saw a very edgy finish when Duagh hit the cross bar in the dying moments but the South Kerry side had done enough, while Scoil Mhuire were finding things that bit easier when they came up against the only team to beat them to date in Ardfert. Cahersiveen got off to a great start and had a 7 point lead at the break and extended their advantage in the second half and won by 10 points on a score of 4-4 to 1-3. This was an amazing feat for the town of Cahersiveen, and when captains Jenny Mahony and Daragh Stack were presented with the plaques to commemorate their victory the cheers of excitement and delight could be heard all the way back in Cahersiveen. A special word of thanks must go to all involved with the two teams especially Peter Murphy, Denis Daly, Tim Dennehy, Pa Connell, Edward Stack and Ger O’Sullivan and the teachers of both schools. The teams on the day to take part were: St. Josephs – Carla Boyle, Shauna Murphy, Megan O’Connell, Karina Karciva, Jenny Mahony, Orla Donovan, Emma O’Shea, Sarah O’Connell, Kerri Dowling and Amy Fitzgerald. Scoil Mhuire – Daragh Stack, Ronan McCarthy, Gaberial Dennehy, Nikita Pugachouv, Denis Daly, Darren O’Sullivan, Liam Stapleton, Killian Nolan, Conor O’Shea and Aidan O’Connor.
