St. Mary’s overcame Derrynane in the South Kerry League on Saturday evening last under wet and windy conditions at the Derrynane venue. The home team suffered a setback before the break when Austin Constable brought his side back into the game with a penalty after Derrynane took an early advantage. However, Derrynane never gave up and battle hard throughout while the Mary’s, without 6 regulars, seemed to have the substantial fire power up front especially with Constable racking up 1-6, and substitute Paul O’Donoghue opening his senior account with 1-1, while the home side were relying on scores from frees with 4 of their 7 points coming from placed kicks.

Joe Corridan opened the scoring for the home side but after a foul on Daniel O’Sullivan, Austin Constable instantly replied from a 25m free. In what was a scrappy and lackluster first quarter chances were few and far between, but as both teams got back into the game David Breen and Adam Quirke exchanged points after 20 minutes, before the two sides had goal chances firstly John Moran squandered in front of the net for Derrynane, and then when Vinny Moriarty came close Richard White pulled off a good save to denied the Mary’s a goal. Moriarty found himself again with a chance in front of goal when a Daniel O’Sullivan ball found the corner forward he was felled in the area and Austin Constable stepped up and converted to put a goal between the sides, goal chances were still on offer and after Liam Sheehan weaved through a number of players he played the ball off to John Paul Mahony who found himself wrong footed and put the it wide. In the final 3 minutes, Donnacha Desmond pointed from a free after a foul on Joe Corridan, Adrian Breen added a magnificent long range point while after a foul on Daniel O’Sullivan, Constable converted from 21m to leave the half time score Derrynane 0-4, St. Mary’s 1-3.

The sides exchanged scores in the opening minutes of the second half with David Breen hitting two points for Derrynane and Austin Constable sailing three scores over the bar for the visitors. Both Paul O’Donoghue, 16, and Sean Cournane, 16, debutant, were introduced midway through the second half to add presence to a forward line had being running riot, and give the young players the experience of senior football. With this the younger players now taking control, it was Liam Sheehan who firstly got a point, after flicking the ball up, turning and slipping the ball over the bar to put 5 between the sides. Paul O’Donoghue then stole the show for 5 minutes remaining in regulation time, firstly after Daniel O’Sullivan set him on his way, he racked up his first senior point and then two minutes later he combined with Sean Cournane to strike for goal from 21m out for an opportunist strike to put his side 7 out in front. With time running out Derrynane faded while St. Mary’s kept going and added two points in the dying minutes from Austin Constable and finally Adam Quirke to leave the final score in Derrynane, Derrynane 0-7 St. Mary’s 2-10.

Best players for the home side included Donnacha Desmond, Adrian & David Breen and Joe Corridan, while the visitors were best served by Liam Corcoran, James Fitzgerald, Daniel O’Sullivan, Adam Quirke, Austin Constable and Paul O’Donoghue. St. Mary’s will be pleased coming out of this one with a big advantage, but at times during the game they didn’t look like a Division 1 outfit, but when you consider the side to be without the likes of Dermot Walsh, Ray Keane, Bryan Sheehan, Ml Pat O’Donoghue, Darren Corcoran, Brian Curran and John Quirke you could excuse them.  Both teams are on the road next week in the first round of the County League as Derrynane travel to Knocknagoshel in Division 5 and the Mary’s travel to Rathmore in Division 1.
