South Kerry U-14 A Final

 St. Mary's 1-08 Renard 2-11

Waterville 7th June @ 7:30

St. Mary's U-14's were unlucky not to finish their season off on a high when they were defeated by local rivals Renard in the South Kerry A Final on a score line of St. Mary's 1-08 Renard 2-11. The score line didn't reflect the spirit of this truly exciting game as the game could have went any way with 5 minutes to go.

St. Mary's got off to a flying start when inside the first minute midfielder Shane Horgan kicked over a free from close range, the free taker was involved in the second score of the game for the Mary's again when he dropped in a 45 to the box and Joshua McGabhann made contact with his fist to get the ball over the bar. Shane was on the score sheet again a minute later when he kicked over a long range free to give the Mary's a 3 point advantage. Renard registered their first score of the game from corner forward Karen O'Neill with the help of a rebounded ball from a Mary's defender. Shane Horgan once again knocked over a free to maintain the Mary's advantage. Renard then went on a scoring spree for 5 minutes in which they added 4 points from a Dara O'Neill free, Brian Curran, Kevin Kelly and another free but this time undeserved from Dara O'Neill. St. Mary' were to have the final say of the half when half forward Daniel Daly levelled the score and left the score at the short whistle St. Mary's 0-5 Renard 0-5.

The second half was more exciting and produced 12 scores but mostly for Renard. It took 6 minutes for the opening score of the first half which was a goal mouth scramble and led to a Dara O'Neill goal to give Renard a 3 point advantage. Another one of Renards female stars were on the score sheet when Caoimh Young kicked the ball while on a dazzling run through the defence and led to a point. After 41 minutes of football Dara O'Neill was on the score sheet yet again with a free from close in, but this point wasn't to stand for long when Conor Quirke retaliated and kicked over a point at the other end. St. Mary's then piled on the pressure, much to the envy of the large Renard following, which led to a well deserved Aidan Walsh point. The Mary's following once again felt cheated when the referee gave a free from close in to Renard in which Dara O'Neill converted. This was a big blow to the Mary's but what was to come was to be much worse as Renards midfielder Brian Curran ran rings around the Mary's defence and buried the ball past the Mary's Damien Horgan who could do noting about the shot. St. Mary's brought one point back when substitute Stephen O'Sullivan knocked the ball over the bar to leave the Mary's still trailing by 5 points. Renards Dara O'Neill was once again on the score sheet when he took a quick free and received the return and pointed. St. Mary's were then thrown a life line with 4 minutes to go when Shane Horgan buried the ball past a packed net from a 13 yard free. The Mary's were now only 2 points behind but this margin didn't last long as Renards Kevin Kelly and Caoimh Young capped off the victory for Renard. St. Mary's had some very inspirational players throughout the game they included captain Colin Walsh, Aidan Walsh, Jason Moran, Colm O'Sé and Damien Horgan in goal. This was the Mary's U-14's last game of the year and a lot of credit must go to the trainers and selectors Christy O'Connell, Micheal Daly, Mattie Quirke and John O'Connor for all the hard work they have put in through the year. The Mary's GAA Club would like to send commiserations to all the people involved in this team and keep their heads up.
