10th June 2006 - Frank Curran Engineering South Kerry U14 Championship Final in Waterville St. Mary's 0-06 V 4-05 Waterville The widely tipped favourites to lift the South Kerry U14 Championship, St. Mary’s, got a land when they were heavily defeated by Waterville in a wet and windy Waterville Sports Field on Saturday afternoon last. The difference between the two sides was without a doubt the lethal scoring power up front of one young Barry O’Dwyer who kicked 4-4 from his side’s tally of 4-5. On the other side only Declan Keating could salvage anything for his side with 5 points from 6 with 3 coming from placed balls. Waterville started the better with Barry O’Dwyer contributing 1-1 inside the first 10 minutes with out reply, the signs were ominous from here after with Steven Donnelly and Micheal Curran dominating the full back line and Muireann McAuliffe and Sinead O’Sullivan keeping Kieran O’Driscoll and Daragh O’Sullivan very quiet in the half backs. St. Mary’s did however register their first score after 15 minutes when Declan Keating pointed from close in after enormous pressure from the Mary’s. St. Mary’s main downfall to fall behind early on was their poor shooting with uncountless balls just falling short into the hands of Owen O’Sullivan in the Waterville net. Dwyer added another for the home side just before the break to leave the half time score St. Mary’s 0-1 Waterville 1-2. Waterville picked up where they left off in the first half, when after only a minute of the second half, Barry Dwyer was in for his second goal of the game after good build up play from midfielder Oran Clifford, but this wasn’t the end for Dwyer when he netted again a minute later after he collected a sideline ball and nestled it to the back of the net past Micheal Pat Donnelly. Waterville had now a 10 point gap built up and even when they left their foot off the pedal never looked likely to relinquish there lead. Kieran Driscoll assisted Declan Keating for his second of the game but another Dwyer point cancelled this out when this time John Vincent Dwyer pointed from an acute angle. Midway through the second half St. Mary’s finally got a grasp of proceedings when Declan Keating pointed 3 close range frees without reply, while the visitors also introduced Denis Daly and Daragh Stack to the game and Stack had an immediate effect when he picked up a loose ball and pointed. Despite Damien Horgan and TJ Daly’s best efforts they could do nothing to keep Barry Dwyer quite and when former St. Mary’s man Cathal Keating found him with a 45 he added his 3rd point. With 5 minutes left on the clock and St. Mary’s still battling hard with the likes of Sean O’Shea and Nikita Pugachouv in the backs giving 110 percent they still couldn’t compete with the scoring power of Dwyer and he finished the game in style with his fourth goal in easy fashion and his fourth point to leave the final score in Waterville, Waterville 4-5 St. Mary’s 0-6. Scorers: Waterville – B Dwyer (4-4, 1f), JV Dwyer (0-1). St. Mary’s – D Keating (0-5, 3f), D Stack (0-1).
