- the Maynooth Player of the Year Award 2001
a distraught Padraic Flood
Last years winner Doc Carroll was a worthy winner and it was no surprise to the rest of his teammates, bar one Padraic Flood, and maybe, one Danny Byrne. These townies think they have a divine right to win everything. On the night of the gala award ceremony, where there was much back slapping, it was emerging that there was a late rally of support for young Danny Byrne. Alas it was not enough to overcome the now injury stricken and career threatened Doc Carroll. On the other hand you had the extremely cocky and smug looking Padraic Flood who (being a townie) was convinced he should get his grubby hands on the Waterford Crystal this year, as he put it "because i have played in every position this year, i deserve it, i take the corners and free kicks, i'm a great lad".
When the announcement was made Padraic Flood could be seen to be mouthing the words "i don't believe it, i am so sick" to which Spoons and Esser replied "shut your horn", which he duly did. To cap off a bad night he almost got involved in a street brawl with Muttser,a first team player. Rumour has it Padraic tried the Peoples Elbow. To this day Padraic Flood still smarts when the Player of the Year award is mentioned and it is believed he truly begrudges Doc Carroll of this award. Extreme case of sour grapes i do think.
As this seasons campaign is well under way now, the early hot favourite has to be the aforementioned, Padraic Flood. Already he has played as full back and as centre half and to Padraic, that should already guarantee him the title. Throw in a few goals and "i'll have it won by Christmas". Don't shoot your load yet Padraic.
