THE JOE HOARE TROPHY - Peter Schweppes reflects on the days cycling

Ah Feck !, forgot to set the alarm, too much Vino, the morning looks a little overcast, I wont bother going to the Cherry Tree (Kevin Prunty and Eddie Blair)
to meet the lads I will go directly to the Popes Cross. As I cycle up the Kyber Pass ( a well known road in the park ) I think
" Its going to be a nice day".

Dick O'Brien, Donal O'connell and Willie Marks

Dick is already taking names and
estimated times. I check in,  number eleven, estimated time two hours eighteen minutes. Other riders are arriving in ones and twos, names and times are taken,  pleasantries exchanged.

The riders, 33 have turned up for todays event, head off at minute intervals, Now its my turn, I head off with Tony Kavanagh in tow, we pick up Pierce and some other rider whose name eludes me,(senior moments). Near Clonee we meet a lady in distress, Tracey has a puncture, she is being assisted by the doctor but they have no pump so being the gentlemen that we are we sort out the problem, now there are six.

Donal O'Connell arriving back

As we approach  Dunboyne we are overtaken by Big Red who goes by as if he were riding a sub hour 25. "It is a very good day" Mullagh is reached, Derek misses the turn. now there are seven.

We cycle over new roads (new to me) when suddenly we are overtaken by Hugh Davis. Arthur Ebbs, and Mr. Philip O Brien, now there are ten. What a great way to spend a Sunday. Philip stops for coffee in Palmerstown he has to loose time. Dr. Pat is tailed off as we head up past Marys Hospital.
Hugh Davis leading in Arthur Ebbs, Tracy Piggott and Peter Schweppes
We arrive back at the Popes Cross where Donal O'Connell is checking times.
" It was a very good day"  Why don't we have more events like this.
