LEIXLIP GRAND PRIX JULY 21ST 1963

Billings takes Leixlip race

Paddy Billings ( Irish Road Club ) won the 100 Kilos Leixlip Grand Prix massed start Cycle race over the 5 miles circuit in the Phoenix Park yesterday by a tyre from    Jim Lally (Dublin Wheelers), who had won the Loraine Club's 28 miles event at the Naul circuit last Thursday. Paddy Davis (Loraine) held off Mick dunne (Catford C.C. London) for third place at 5 seconds.
J. J. McCormack (Eagle): T. Donnellan (Eagle), M. Dunne (Catford) and D. Brennan (Dublin Wheelers) got away after 29 miles but the whole field were together again in the closing stages. Entering the back road at the Garda Barrracks, Billings and lally jumped to the front with W. Stewart (Northern C.C.) chasing.

However bad luck dogged stewart who crashed at Mountjoy corner and was later treated for minor injuries.

Billings then held off Lally in a thrilling duel to take the valuable Achilles Perpetual Trophy.
