Introduction:
This Greater Glanmire Area Community Directory has been devised and produced by the Communications Group of the Glanmire Parish Assembly in partnership with Cork City (North) Citizens Information Service.
The Glanmire Parish Assembly is a voluntary group of about 60 people nominated by the people of the parish of Glanmire. This group strives to improve the parish and community life of Glanmire through various events and initiatives; through working closely with the many other voluntary organisations in Glanmire and surrounding areas including both the Glanmire Area Community Association and Upper Glanmire Community Association.
In autumn 2004 the Glanmire Parish Assembly held a Clubs and Societies open night where on a single night and under one roof up to 50 local community and voluntary organisations were represented and promoted their involvement in the community. This event was repeated in autumn 2006 when over 60 organisations were present. Thanks to these events many of the local community organisations recruited new members and volunteers and several new organisations were founded.
Glanmire is fortunate to have many excellent voluntary organisations active in the area catering for all age groups and for a huge variety of needs. The population of Glanmire has grown rapidly from four small villages to a town of over 12,000 people in recent years. Consequently there are many new people living in the area who are not familiar with the resources which are available locally.
This was our main reason for the production of the Greater Glanmire Area Community Directory. We hope this Directory will provide easy access for all residents to contact-information for local voluntary/community-based groups . We hope that it will facilitate an integrated community with an energetic spirit where all residents feel that they belong and are welcome. Ar Scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.
We are very grateful to all the people who contributed to and helped in the publication of this directory. It could not have been done with out your help - Míle Buíochas.

Glanmire (Gleann Maghair):
The picturesque Glanmire Area is situated approximately 5 miles from Cork City centre and comprises the villages of Glanmire(Gleann Maghair), Riverstown (Baile Roisín), Sallybrook (Áth na Sailí) and Brooklodge (Cill Ruadháin). The Glashaboy and Butlerstown rivers converge at Glanmire and enter Cork harbour a short distance away at Dunkettle. Glanmire enjoys many beautiful mature woodlands stretching along its plentiful river valleys. The area also has a rich heritage with evidence of many ancient wells, bridges, mills and buildings still to be seen. The earliest record of Christianity in Glanmire is the evidence of hermits living in the area in early medieval times. This place is still called The Hermitage today. The Church of St. Mary and All Saints was consecrated in 1786. St. Michael’s Church in Upper Glanmire was built in 1808. St. Joseph’s Church in Springhill was built in 1837.
