About Us

Togher International Festival of Amateur Photography was first organised by a group of voluntary workers who were mostly members of "Freagh" Residents Association. It was one of the events held at Togher Community Festival. At that point in time entries were confined to Munster. Over the years there was a lapse in the community festival but the "Team" with The Photograph Section decided to "go it alone" and the event has evolved over the years.

It is organised by a team rather than a committee. The joint co-ordinators of the festival are Chris O' Callaghan and Mary Cummins. The co-ordinators do the organising and decision making by consultation and consensus. Over the years it has worked very well as they adhere to a very strict code of reporting and accounting. A lot of hard work and commitment are required from a large "Team" of Volunteers each year. In all there is a pool of approx. 60 volunteers.

The mission statement of the festival is to promote the Art of Photography among all age groups and at all levels of skill. To promote Cork as a whole and Togher in particular in a positive light. Finally, to encourage young people to become involved in Voluntary Groups and to offer them the opportunity to do so.

The event could not survive without the many sponsorships and grants it has received through the years and all proceeds from the competition go to many different local voluntary groups such as Meals-On-Wheels, The Samaritans, Victim Support and The Penny Dinners. All grants have to be spent strictly in accordance with regulations.

There are many different categories that can be entered in this photography festival. There are separate classes for Irish-Overseas-Novice-Distinction Holders, Over 60 years-Under 21 years and Students studying Photography as part of a 3rd level qualification. As well as a Special award for entries, which have "Peace" or "Peaceful" for their Theme. There is also a category for entries from Amateur Photographers in cities twinned with Cork and a special IYV Class (deferred from 2001). There are also snapshot classes for Irish and Overseas Entrants.

We welcome constructive criticism at all times and would love to hear any ideas you might volunteer regarding themes for the Photographic Classes both Monochrome and Colour.
