PROFILE

1. Location

The club is located at Sutton Park School on St. Fintan's Road in Sutton, close to Sutton Castle. The club is 25-30 mins walk from Sutton Dart Station and about 10-15 mins walk from the nearest bus stop on the 31b Bus route. Secure parking is provided in the school grounds beside the club.

2. Some Information About The Club

The club was formed as a result of an amalgamation between two local clubs, Howth Summit and Redrock. The club was first called Howth Summit-Redrock in season 87-88 but was then renamed Baily from season 88-89. The club is affiliated to the Leinster Branch of the Badminton Union of Ireland and each playing member is affiliated to the Leinster Branch. Membership consists of Senior, Student, Honorary and Junior members. The club provides public liability insurance cover for its members, visitors and the public.

The objectives of the club are twofold:

(a) To promote the sport of Badminton for the benefit of its members and to compete in League, Cup and Tournament matches open to the club.

(b) To organise and run social functions for the members and their friends.

3. Badminton Activity

The club's badminton season normally runs from September to April each year. The 2008-2009 season will start on Monday 1st September and will finish in late April 2009. Play is on two nights a week, Monday and Thursday from 7.30p.m. until 11p.m. To ensure that all members get equal badminton playing time each night, a pegboard system is used to control play on the club's two courts. A member can choose to play only in the club or can also play in competitive badminton competitions run under the auspices of the Leinster Branch of Badminton Ireland(LBBUI). Coaching is arranged for both beginners and improvers through the LBBUI.

Membership fees for the 2007-2008 season were EUR190 for Senior Members, EUR120 for Student Members and EUR95 for Junior Members. This included all affiliation/competition fees to the LBBUI and members' insurance.

The club enters teams in the 'Dublin and District Leagues and Cups', run by the LBBUI each season. Teams are entered in the Mens and Ladies Leagues and Cups, and the Mixed League and Cup.

The club achieved outstanding success in the 1999/00 season winning the Mens Class 6 League, the Mixed Class 5 League and the Ladies Class 5 Cup competitions. 

In season 2003-2004, the club won the Ladies Class 4A League. Our Mixed team reached the final of both the League and Cup in Class 4A.

In season 2005-2006, the club reached the final of both the Ladies Class3 League and the Mixed Class 4A League.

In season 2007-2008, the club won the Mens Class 4 Cup and reached the final of both the League and Cup in Ladies Class 3.

The Mixed League/Cup competitions consist of teams of eight players , 4 men and 4 ladies. In the league, eight games are played in each match. The games consist of 2 mens' doubles, 2 ladies' doubles and 4 mixed doubles with each player playing a doubles and mixed doubles game. In the cup, a maximum of 9 games is played consisting of 1 mens' singles, 1 ladies' singles, 2 mens' doubles, 2 ladies' doubles and 3 mixed doubles. Each player plays a maximum of two games. For the 2007-2008 season, the league competitions were run from November to the end of March, with the finals in April/May. The first round of the cups were run in January with the finals in March.

The Mens/Ladies League competitions consist of teams of four players. Each player plays two games in each match with the same partner for each game. For the 2007-2008 season, the leagues were run from November to the end of March with the finals in April/May. The first round of the Mens and Ladies cups were completed in January with the finals in April.

The club organises its own competitions between members during the season, usually in preparation for the 'Dublin and District Leagues and Cups' competitions and after March when most of the competitive badminton is finished for the season.

4. Club Award

Eddie Johnston (President) received the Stein Travel Club Member of the Year Award for the Leinster Region on the 2nd April 2005. This inaugural Club Member of the Year Awards night was hosted through the BUI and was held in the White Sands Hotel, Portmarnock, Co.Dublin.

5. Social Events

The club organises a number of social events during the season e.g. Christmas Party, fun nights etc. An end of season dinner is sometimes held in May/June. 

6. Summer/Autumn Club

A Summer and Autumn Club is usually run during May and August respectively. They are normally held on one night per week from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. These nights allow existing members to 'keep their hand in' and to introduce the game and the club to new people before the season starts again in September. Anyone can play in the summer club and do not have to be members or become members of the club. A fee is usually paid 'on the night'. 

7. New Members

The club always welcomes new members to the club. We have members playing at all grades up to Class 3.
