Cool Yule

The Winter Solstice in the Celtic tradition is the time of the birth of the divine child, a time of major pagan festivals, and with this birth comes the power of the new year.

Tle soltices fall on different days from year to year in the Gregorian (Western) calendar, and in AD440 the christian church fixed the date on which they would celebrate the birth of Christ as the 25th of December, the date of the winter solstice in that year. (it is now commonly assumed that Jesus was in born in September, going on evidence about the position of the Star of Bethlehem at the time of his of birth.)

From this time of year the days slowly begin to lengthen, and the increasing light represents new beginning. But it is also the shortest day of the year it paradoxically represents the greatest triumph over darkness.

My Friend,
They will return again,
All over the Earth,
They are returning again,
Ancient teachings of the Earth,
Ancient songs of the Earth,
they are returning again,
They are returning
I give them to you,
And through them
You will understand,
You will see.
They are returning again
Upon the Earth.

Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness
