Harts Tongue Fern
Harts-tongue ferns are found in The
Burren and on the Aran Islands. They grow in scailps or in the shelter of
walls. They are also found in woods and hazel scrub. They are bright green
and have wavy leaves when they are young. But they become beaten by the
weather even in sheltered scailps. They have leaves all year round and new
leaves come in summer. They are to be seen all year round.

Primrose Primroses are abundant in our locality.
The flowers are large, flat, pale yellow with a darker yellow at the
centre. They are to be found as a single bloom on a solitary hairy stem.
This flower blooms in April, May and June.

Irish Orchid Irish orchids are found in The Burren
and the Aran Islands. It has also been found in Donegal, Fermanagh and
Cork. It is difficult to find. Their flowers are a very pale yellow. The
stem is 20cm long. It is in bloom in May. |

Honey Suckle The Honeysuckle is a woody climber
that loses its leaves in Winter. It is very common in our locality and
especially so in summertime when its fragrant flowers can be scented when
a person is out walking. The flowers which bloom in June, July, August and
September, are shaped rather like a yellow trumpet

Selfheal
Selfheal is a purple flower with oval shaped
leaves. It is found in the Burren and Aran Islands. It is familiar as an
unwanted lawn weed. It flowers in June, July, August and September. It can
be a very beautiful flower. |

Common Butter Wort The common Butterwort grows in places where the soil is moist and poor. They have a purple flower and the leaves are yellow-green, covered with sticky glands. They are carnivorous plants trapping insects on its fly paper like surface..

Yellow Rattle
It's common in grassy places in the
Burren and Aran Islands. When you are walking in grassy places and in
meadows full of flowers, you can hear it rattle under your feet. It has a
green leaf and flowers in April, May, June, July, August and
September. It is an annual herb..

Turlough Dandelion
This flower is mainly found
around turloughs. It usually blooms around the summer months. The
Turlough dandelion has a red stem and a yellow flower and the leaves are
very narrow. It is a very common flower in the Burren.

Bloody Crane
The Bloody Crane is common in the
Burren on limestone pavement. It is a purple flower with a thin green stem. It blooms from early
Summer to early Autumn. The Bloody Crane is one of the most beautiful
flowers in the Burren and grows in great abundance here. |

Burnet Rose
The Burnet Rose is also a common flower
throughout the Burren. This flower blooms in the summer months. The stems
of this flower is thorny and the flower can be white cream or pink. In Autumn the small leaves turn a deep red and the hips are black.

Fairy Fox Glove
The Fairy Fox Glove is not as common
as others in the Burren. It is purple with small green leaves. It blooms
in May and June. It is a short lived flower. |

Bird Foot TrefoilThis flower is very common in the
Burren. It grows near the seaside and roadsides. This is the most colourful
flower in the Burren. It has orange-red petals with green shamrock like leaves and it usually comes in bunches high up in the mountain. Birds-foot decribed the arrangement of the long
brownish seed-pods. |
Mountain Avens
The Mountain avens are very common
throughout the Burren It blooms from the end of May. It has a small white rose like
flower with a green stem. It is a very beautiful flower.

Maiden Spleen Wort
This fern is also very common
throughout the burren. This fern is an evergreen with very thin leaves. Sometimes it grows in
walls . It grows to about 10cm tall. |
False Oxlip
Common in grassy places in our locality, growing with primroses and cowslips. This is a cowslip-like plant with erect stems and clusters of flat, pale yellow, primrose-like flowers. It has been produced by chance, by the crossbreeding of a primrose and a cowslip. They bloom in April May and June.

Cowslip
Common in grassy places in our locality. Cowslips are plentiful in our area. These lovely flowers are sometimes very abundant in small fields that are still grazed by cattle but which have not been improved and fertilized. They are also common on the green roads. They bloom in April and May.They are small deep yellow with paddle shaped leaves.

Wild Iris
The wild Iris only grows in wet places, marshy fields and lough margins. The wild iris is one of our most beautiful wild plants and is very common in marshy places, ditches and wet fields throughout west Ireland. They bloom in June. The wild iris has a yellow flower with green leaves arranged in a fan.

Wild Strawberry
Abundant in woods, scrub and grassy places in our area. The fruits of the wild strawberry are small but creamy and tasty. This flower blooms in April, May, June and July. It has a white flower with bright green leaves.

Spring Gentian
It grows in grassy places and on peaty hummocks overlying limestone. Without doubt the spring gentian is one of the most active wild flowers in our parish. It blooms in May but plants will start flowering in late April. When the winter has been mild, the few blossoms may be found on north facing slopes or on the higher hills into mid-June during cool, late spring. The spring gentian has five petals which are pale blue.

Common Dog Violet
Common on peaty hummocks in scailps on limestone pavement and on roadside banks. Common dog violet grows abundantly around us, and blooms from early spring. The flowers are blue-violet with heart shaped green leaves.This flower blooms from early Spring.

Oxeye Daisy
The oxeye daisy is very common in fields, grassy places and in limestone areas throughout the Burren. The oxeye daisy is in bloom in Summer. It is a large daisy-like flower with dark green leaves.

Heather
The common heather is found in the Burren on peaty hummocks or often on top of limestone. They are purple shrubs of heather with dark green stems and can grow up to a metre tall. It blooms from July to September.

Bracken
Bracken is abundant in the Burren especially on peaty soil. Bracken is a familiar plant and is found all over the world. It is a fern so it does not flower. It is a deciduous fern with green leaves and has a triangular outline. It is most common from April to October

Early Purple Orchid
This flower is frequent in the Burren.It flowers in the months of April, May and June. This flower is usually purple but can be pink or white. There are about 23 leaved flowers on a light green stem.
