Birds of Tubber

The Mallard is a type of duck. The male has a green head, a white neck ring, a chestnut breast and a greyish body. The female is a brownish colour with a white tail. The female makes a loud quack noise whereas the male makes a soft noise. They breed on the lakes around Tubber in summer time. The female lays green eggs.

The Tufted duck is a type of waterfowl. They raise their families in the lakes of the Burren. The male is blackish with a wispy crest annd white flanks. They make a low whistling sound. The female is a warm brown with a small white patch. They have eight to ten pale blue or greenish eggs.

The Snipe is a type of wading bird. It comes to the shallow waters of Ireland in the Summer. Snipe are brownish with a white belly. It also has a long beak which it uses to dig down through the mud to find small animals. They can be 27cm long. The snipes voice sounds like a sharp scraping noise. Its home is in the fresh water marshes. The eggs of the snipe are olive brown with black spots. The eggs are layed in a grass lined nest. Snipe fly in a zig zag pattern very quickly. They can also hide in the ground cover.

The Great White Fronted Goose is a brown colour with a white belly. They have a white patch on the front of their face, their bills are usually pink and their legs are orange. These geese make a bark like "kla-ha" sound. The great white fronted geese lay five or six creamy coloured eggs a year. In Winter they come to Ireland and stay on the turloughs.

Whooper Swans have black bills with a yellow patch on the upper part. They are a white colour. When it is flying it makes a sound like a whoop whoop. The whooper swan also comes to Ireland in the Winter. They lay two to five white eggs each year in a large amount of reeds and other plants close to the water. In 1994 a whooper swan was spotted in Tubber and was called Curran. The swan was tracked from Iceland to Tubber.

The Cuckoo is a grey and white bird with yellow legs. It is known to be a selfish bird because she lays her eggs in another birds nest. When the cuckoos eggs hatch they push the other weaker birds out of the nest. The cuckoo goes to Africa in the Autumn and returns to Ireland in the Spring when you can hear the cuckoo
