The kitchen was always very busy with servants preparing meals. The lord and his family ate very well. The poor people had very plain food like water, stale bread and goose eggs. Each day in the kitchen bread was baked in the brick oven. Meat was cooked on a spit and turned so the meat was cooked all over. Meat like boar(wild pig)and deer were cooked over the spit. Other foods were boiled in a cauldron. They also made drink in the kitchen. Wine was made from grapes on the wine press and the brewer made beer.It was very important to keep stores of food in the castle in case of a siege. A siege was when the castle was surrounded by enemies and noone could leave the castle until the lord surrendered. Stores of food were kept to stop people starving. |
