Dyeing with Red Cabbage,Soap and Vinegar

The red cabbage is an indicator.
Acids turn red/pink and alkali turn blue/green.

Using Litmus Paper

We used litmus paper also.
BLUE litmus turns RED in acid
RED litmus turns BLUE in alkali

Simple Circuits

Electricity only flows when there
is a complete circuit. In these simple circuits we
discovered that if one wire travels from the
terminal to the side of the bulb and
the other wire goes from the base of the
bulb to the second terminal.

Other Circuits

In these experiments we found that in
the parralel and series circuits the 2 bulbs lit more dimly than
circuits with one bulb.We also found
that two batteries made the bulb shine more brightly.

Make your own lighthouse

We studied various types of circuits and constructed a lighthouse using a simple circuit.

The Acrobatic Clown

We created a clown and we attached coins onto his hands to lower the centre of gravity so he could balance.

Rainbow Spinner

We coloured a cardboard circle with the seven colours of the rainbow. When we spinned it around it appeared to lose its colour. We also worked with prisms splitting white light into its different colours.

How much air can my Lungs hold?

Each time we breathe our lungs fill with air and empty again. Using the bottle we see the amount of empty space at the top of the bottle shows the amount of air that was in your lungs and which pushed the water out.

Diving Drops

Oil is lighter than water and sits on top of the water. When we shake the jar the colour drops disperse throughout the water giving the water a blue colour.

Dancing Raisins

The raisins are heavier than the drinks and sink to the bottom of both water and 7 up. At the bottom of the 7 up the raisins collect bubbles of carbon dioxide making them lighter than the liquid causing them to raise to the surface. The gas bubbles raise the raisins to the surface and burst. The raisins sink once more and the process continues as long as the drink is fizzy.

What happens when oil spills at sea?

We created a shoreline using pebbles, salted water and placed them in a dish. Mixing oil and cocoa powder we created crude oil. This mixture was added slowly to the shoreline. This mixture formed a scum on the water bloking out light etc. Also the mixture stuck to the rocks this showed the effect of water pollution.

Snake Spiral

The snake cardboard cut out was suspended above the hot radiator. The snake began to spin as the hot air rose. This shows that hot air rises travelling in heat currents.

Watching Yeast Work

As the yeast feeds on the sugar it makes carbon dioxide, which fills the mixture with bubbles. These bubbles pop and the gas blows up the balloon.

Light Broken Up

When the beam of light entered the water it changed direction. When light passes from air to water, it changes speed, which causes a change in direction. This is called refraction. The same reason can explain how a pencil which is underwater looks as if it has moved away from the part over the water.

Visit to the Atlantaquaria

In Galway Atlantaquaria we used microscopes to view a baby seahorse and sandhoppers.

Visit to the Atlantaquaria

We were taken on a guided tour and were allowed to handle some of the sea creatures. Here we are with a sea-horse.

A certificate of participation from Galway Atlantaquaria.
