The Ugly Fairy

by Sibeal Hanrahan

Once upon a time there was an ugly fairy. Her name was Sarah. When she was a baby the wicked witch cast a spell on her to make her ugly because the witch hated her parents. After the spell Sarah was covered in big boils on her face. The other fairy girls and boys would laugh at her and they did not want to play with her. Her mom told her "don't mind them fairies".

Sarah didn't listen to her mother as she felt very sad. So one morning she decided to fly away off into the forest. In the forest she saw some lovely flowers and picked them up. Suddenly she heard a voice behind her it was Oliver Owl. He had a hurt wing when the hunter had shot him. He was very scared. Sarah had a cast in her bag, so she popped it on Oliver. Oliver thanked the fairy and they became friends. He had never met anybody as kind as her.

She fluttered on into the forest and started to think about her family and felt sad and lonely. She still didn't want to return because of the fairy girls and boys. Sarah saw someone walking along the forest. She could also see a tiny ladybird. She zoomed over as quick as she could. She caught the ladybird just before he was about to be smashed. The ladybird squeaked " Thank you" and he also said, 'It doesn't matter what you look like on the outside. It matters if you're kind and have a good heart inside and you Sarah, you are beautiful". She fluttered on along the forest path. At home her parents were worried. They went out looking for her until they came to the forest.

They saw a big owl, and asked him if he had seen a little fairy.
He said "yes". That's our Sarah thought her parents.
"Where is she?" they asked.
"She fluttered up that path" Oliver told them. They went after her. They saw something moving along the forest path. It turned out to be the ladybird. They asked him the same question. The ladybird told Sarah's parents how she had saved his life.
"I will bring you to her" he told them.
They all went further into the forest and saw a footprint in the mud. It looked like a fairy foot print.
"That means we're on the right track" said Sarah's father. Eventually they found her crying up in a tree.
"Come down", yelled her mum and Sarah flew down. She told her parents that she did not want to go back. A kind forest witch had seen the good deeds that Sarah had done in the forest. She said to herself "she'd make the little fairy beautiful because she was so kind. She waved her magic wand and she turned Sarah into a beautiful fairy. Sarah looked at herself in the mirror and saw a beautiful face looking back.
She asked her Dad "Really do I look beautiful to you?".

"You always do", he replied. They all went back to Fairyland and lived happily ever after.
