The Blues hosted Sligo Rovers in the RSC and were only playing for pride as any chance of a top two finish had disappeared the week previous when Athlone took all three points home with them. As Jimmy preparation's got under way for next season this was a chance for all the players to show they wanted to remain with Waterford United FC next season.

A full stand in the RSC when will we see this again

Jimmy made two forced changes on Friday night, Flanagan was suspended so Wayne Fitzgerald took over the duties of tackling and working hard beside Dempsey in midfield, and Smith replaced Hunt who is suffering with a back injury. The Blues started well and had the better of the game against the young Silgo side. Don O'Riordan the Sligo manager has now stamped his style on the Sligo team, rough and hard tackling, as he did with Galway United before his departure last season. It took a wonder strike from Kevin Waters to open the scoring, he received the ball 24 yards from goal as let fly with his left peg and gave the Sligo keeper no chance as the ball thundered into the net. On a soft pitch the Blues tried to pass the ball around, but short 10 yard passes on this surface often lead to mistakes and Waterford were lucky a few times not to concede a silly goal.

Kevin Waters midweek training programme worked on Friday night
as he scored a wonder goal against Bit O'Red

A back injury to Paul Binder saw him replaced by Anthony Fennelly at half time. In the second period we ran Sligo into the ground, with good movement and ball possession. We scored twice more after Podge Drew was sent for an early shower for a sliding tackle which saw him miss the ball but not the player. Our second goal was scored by Gary Dempsey, his 14th league goal, for a midfielder this was a brilliant scoring rate and he was rewarded by Don Givens the Irish Under 21 manager as he was drafted into his squad for the upcoming friendly against Denmark. Our third and final goal was scored by Andy Myler, who has now scored 4 goals in his short spell with the mighty Blues. If only we could get more crosses into the box from either wings I think Andy would score a lot more for us. A 3-0 win in our last game in the RSC this season and we can now look forward to July when summer soccer is introduced to the eircom National League.
