2001/2002 Match Report #7

eircom National League First Division
The first local derby of the season ended in a dour 0-0 draw, with neither goalkeeper getting his gear dirty. After the midweek defeat to Limerick PP finally listened to the fans and played a 4-4-2 formation, but with the lack of strikers available on the night he had no option. From the start of the game Kilkenny slowed everything down and kept this pace throughout the match. Not many chances were created in the game as both teams lacked a strike force to trouble the mean defences. Waterford looked more solid than we had in our three previous games, with players doing the simple thing in defence. Kevin Waters had our only chances but his reluctance to shoot on both occassions saw the opportunities pass him by. Fennelly had a quiet game to his delight, after conceeding 10 goals in the last three matches. If the Blues had either Barry or Bradley in the line up I'm sure that they would have won the game as the lack of movement up front was all the Blues were missing. Waterford now have a platform to build on for the rest of the season, its up to PP and his backroom staff and more importantly the players to lift themselves and give the supporters something to shout about.
