Tommy Lynch has been announced as the new
player/manager of Waterford United. Lynch, a flame-haired 31-year-old
Limerick native, who played for his home-town club before joining Sunderland
and then clocking up over 300 appearances in the colours of Shrewsbury
Town, has vowed to let youth have its fling.
Says Lynch: "We intend to train hard and play hard, and I don't accept
losing too graciously. I will be out there in the middle. I know what
it takes to succeed and there is plenty of young talent in the Waterford
area." Despite having over ten years playing experience in the newly-renamed
Nationwide League, he has no intention of bringing over professionals
from England. "I will only bring a player or two if I'm really stuck.
And with Waterford Bohemians having just won the FAI Junior Cup, we know
the talent is there."
Helping Lynch in his task will be the man who guided Bohs to that success,
Martin Barrett, who knows the local scene like the back of his hand. Lynch
has been given a two year contract, with his aim being to bring the Blues
back into the top flight of Irish football. The club has a new physio
in the shape of Eddie Jackman.
There's also a new board in place: Willie Moran (secretary), Eamon Rice,
John O'Driscoll, Eamon Reid, David Flynn, Tom Mullane, Bob Tweedy, Sean
Rockett and Paul Cooke. So, a fresh start for the coming season for the
Blues, here's hoping for a fresher finish...
