18/03 Cobh Ramblers V's Waterford United is on Friday night at 7.30pm kick off. The Blues last league game of the season is now on Fridday night in St. Colman's Park. 15/03 Jimmy McGeough is now in talks with all squad members about new season when the Blues will try agian to gain their rightful place in the county's top league. It will be interesting to see who Jimmy retains and what new players he brings in, but the most talked about contract has to be that of Gary Dempsey and can the Blues keep this player next season? Will a big money offer come in from other club's in the Premier Division or will he again try his hand across the Irish Sea? 25/02 Shamie Coad has been appointed as Waterford United under 21 manager. Shamie was in this position about 5 years ago when it was then the reserve team. Since then Shamie has managed in the Premier Division in Waterford. Shamie would have a good knowledge of local football, but would this include the youth set up in the city. A good young assistant is needed to work with Shamie if this appointment is going to succeed. 22/02 Jimmy McGeough was fined 127 euro by the FAI today for his sending off. McGeough was sent to the line after a tackle by Tony Smith on a Drogs defender started a row between Jimmy and Harry McCue (Drogs Manager), over the incident. McCue was also fined but also received a touchline ban for 2 weeks. thankfully our new boss has plenty of money and now wants to know if if can pay the fine with US Dollars!!!! 21/02 The Blues are in the news again, this time for suspending Centre Half David Whittle for two weeks. Whitle after his on the pitch bust up in Finn Park on sunday, was also involved in a dressing room incident after the match and now as this comes to light I don't remember seing him warming down in Ballybofey. The Club is bigger than any individual and what happened on the pitch was a disgrace and embarrasing to the Blue jersey, Blue's players, Directors and Fans (all 10 of us). Even though their is nothing anybody involved in Waterford United PLC wants more this season than promotion, discipline and team spirit must go above all.We have 5 games left this season and 5 victories would see us snatch second place and a trip to Longford for a promotion/relegation play off match. 04/02 The postponed match against Drogheda United has now been re fixed fro Thursday night in the RSC. Kick off is 7.30pm and a large crowd is expected. There is also talk that the Blues will travel to play Finn Harps on sunday afternoon in Donegal. 03/02 34 players turned up for training on Sunday morning in Newtown. New signings Kelvin Flanagan, Andy Myler, Tony Smith and Padraig Drew were all in attendance as Jimmy and Giles put them through their paces. It will be very interesting to see Jimmy first eleven when we do have a match again. My guess - Fennelly, O'Brien, Rea, Whittle, Frost, Smith, Flanagan, Dempsey, Drew, Myler and Hunt. Subs: Breen, Whittle, Leahy, Barry and Morris. 02/02 After the match was postponed in Finn Park last weekend, the Blues home game against league leaders Drogheda was also called off due to a waterlogged RSC. The game against Drogheda may be played on thursday night, with the Harps match going ahead on Sunday. 20/01 The Blues directors and management have decided to play Derry City in the League Cup on this Sunday at 2pm after playing Finn Harps in Ballybofey on Saturday night at 7.30pm. This is a very good decision as it saves the club financially and also gives jimmy time to have a relaxing chat and night with the players after beating the Harps to go second in the league. Loan signings Colin O'Brien and Noel Hunt and new signings Kelvin Flanagan and Andy Myler are cup tied for the clash in the Brandywell. So expect a changed team on sunday as the league title is what we all want in the RSC. 15/01 Jimmy McGeough was tonight unveiled as Manager of Waterford United until the end of the season. At a press conference in the Tower Hotel Jimmy was introduced back to the 90 press and supporters who turned up to welcome him back to the sunny southeast after being away for 26 years. Rossa stated that even though he had only signed a contract for two months that both the directors and Jimmy had already talked about next season, the eight league games left in this season will give both parties time to see if they have a future together. Brendan Rea will be the assistant manager with Giles Cheevers first team coach. With only six wins needed in the remaining games to assure the Blues promotion we can all look forward to a super 2 months. 06/12 Brendan Rea and Paul Scully have been placed in charge for fridays nights game against Dublin City. This will be a big test for the young Blues who will go joint top if they manage to defeat the Vikings. It will be interesting to see what size crowd will turn up after the weeks upheaval in Waterford United PLC. 05/12 PP
Resigns 26/11 The FAI Carslerg Cup has just been made and we came out of the drum away to local rivals Kilkenny City. Although we would have wished for a home draw PP must be happy as this is a game we should win and progress to the third round and with six of the top teams meeting each other a good Cup run is again possible this season. Maybe the 50/1 price on the Blues will now be cut. 26/11 even though the Ian St. John fund rasing night has been cancelled the game against our local rivals still goes ahead on thursday night. A big crowd is expected so come early kick off is 7.30pm. Blues will go top of the table if they win the fourth local derby of the season. 25/11 Blues one point off the top of the table after narrow victory over Limerick in Jackman Park. Promotion looking more and more likely as PP's men are now the in form team in the 1st Division. 08/11 PP has accepted new responsiblies within the club and is still first team manager at Waterford United PLC. This is a happy outcome for Blues fans as the last thing we need half way through the season is a change of manager. 06/11 Rumours circlate waterford that PP has been sacked as manager of the Blues. Parnell Street has yet to comment and we await their statement. 22/10 Cobh Ramblers V's Waterford United now on Firday 26th October. Kick off rremains the same time 7.30pm. This change of date I only presume is because Cobh are playing Cork in the League Cup on Bank Holiday Monday. 14/10 Jason Bowmans Under 21 team beat limerick 3-2 in Kilbarry on Saturday last. The Blues went two up before Limerick came back to level the match only for Waterford to score a winner. Goalscoreres Paul Scully Ian Barry and Joey Watson. This result leaves us in second place 1 point behind Cobh Ramblers. 02/10 Blues sign Trevor Berry from Rotherham United. Trevor who has decided to move to Ireland, home for his wife, gave PP a ring to see if he could join the famous Waterford United as got a favourable response after a weeks trial. trevor is an attacking midfielder who is 27 years of age and born on the 1st August. Trevor has also received England youth caps. 14/09 Ex blues players Jason Kabia and Donal golden will visit the RSC on Saturday night at 6pm when Waterford United will play Cobh Ramblers. After the posponment on friday the Blues hastily arranged the match for Saturday night. Don't forget McGinetys at around 4.30pm for English full time results. 13/09 Game off. Due to the national day of mourning on friday the Blues home match against Cobh Ramblers has be postponed. hopefully this game will take place on Saturday night. another idea would be to play the under 21 game and the first team match one after another. Waterford were due to play cobh on Saturday night in St. Colmans Park. So why not make both games in one venue, kick off times 5pm and 7.30pm to facilitate fans and players. 29/08 Aaron Moroney has finally signed for the blues for the coming season. After being unsure whether we would see young Moroney again in a Blue jersey PP has got the lads name on a registration form. Last season was one of mixed fortune for Moroney as created many chances during the season but failed to sparkle on the goals count. He is a young player who will only get better as he learns from playing with the country's best. Nice to see you back Aaron Moroney. 11/08 For some strange reason Ian Barry wasnt registered to play against Finn Harps on Saturday. this seems to have been an error by WUFC. After all the ranting and raving PP did about Hunt signing for Rovers he would have been better off making sure he registered the players on his books. for all the loyal supporters of the Blues stupid mistakes like this have been going on for years and maybe that is why we are struggling as a club. 06/08 PP has learned the biggest lesson so far in his short time as manager of the Blues, as Noel Hunt has joined Shamrock Rovers on a two year contract. Hunty came to Damien Richardson's attention when he played against Rovers in a preseeason friendly in Ozier Park. It happens all the time in Local soccer where players move around as opposition mangers take note of good players and approach them shortly afterwards. To play Hunty in this friendly was probably a mistake but its easy to be wise afterwards. I wonder will be be playing the Hoops in a friendly next season? 24/07 Rovers manager Damien Richardson stayed behind in Waterford on sunday night when he heard that Ian Barry had not signed for Waterford United yet and after a nice feed in a local restaurant called up to Ian's house and promised him the sun, moon and stars if he joined the famous Hoops. he could link up with his Waterford collegue Shane Robinson and newly signed Alan Delahunty (ex Johnville striker, attending college in Dublin next year so signed for the hoops). Didn't hear if he also called to talk to Noel Hunt because from what I know he is not signed either. 21/07 The Blues have signed a total of
43 players for the coming season. These players will be used by
manger Paul Power in the First team and under 21 team. 07/07 Anthony Fennelly has turned down an offer by Cobh Ramblers. With the recent signing of Paul Bundle, 19, from Northampton, rumours has been going around the city that Fenners had left, nothing could be further from the truth as Anthony is back in pre season training running in the sandhills with Paddy Ryan and the rest of the squad. Anthony though had been made an offer by the St. Colman's Park club, but decided to stay with the Blues who had better chance of promotion to the Premier League. 06/07 Ian Barry ex Sunderland striker signs for the Blues. Ian started playing soccer in Michell Kennedy Park with local club Hiberians. It was in the Under 14 kennedy Cup in 1988 Ian first showed his potential when he was outstanding up front as the Waterford league went on to win this competition for only the second time in their history. from this Ian went on trials to many clubs in England and Scotland, before finally deciding to join the Black Cats. In the last three years he has made headlines in the local paper as he scored goals every other week. sunderlands loss is the Blues gain. This sesaon we hope that Ian will score 15 league goals and help the Blues to gain promotion. 27/06 Pre Season Friendlies - 24 July V Darlington RSC - 4 August V Llanelli RSC 23/06 David Breen was named Waterford United Player of the Year for 2000/200, Paul Leahy picked up the under 21 award while Greg Pheasey received the clubman of the Year award. Gerry O'Brien was confirmed as Chairman of Waterford United PLC. 22/06 At the Black and white ball in Jury's on Friday night the draw took place to see what company would have their name on the Blues jersey next season. The winner was GK Print, a local company based in Granagh, who print the club Lotto tickets every forthnight. 18/06 Finally some good news from the RSC as David Breen signs a 2 year contract. It was anticipated that with the departure of Reynolds and Kirby that Breener might also decide to jump ship, but thankfully our experienced centre half has cemented his future with the blues. 09/06 Rumours running around Waterford at present say Gerry O'Brien and Michael Finnegan have parted company with The Blues expect a statement from the club soon. 03/06 Kirby reportly joined Longford Town. Kirby has been offered a contract by Stephen Kenny to play in Flancare Park next season. A good package seems to have taken our top goalscorer, but no one could blame him after many wage cuts in The RSc last year. After spending time with Aston Villa we all hoped Alan would be playing with his home city team for many years, but the lure of premier football has robbed us of a great talent. Thanks for the last few years and best to luck next season Kirbies. Season 2000-2001 13/04 Alan Reynolds and Brendan Rea could be doubtful for Cup Semi final because of the cards received against Dundalk on Tuesday night. Rennie is now due a suspension for the number of points he's picked up and Brendan Rea will also receive a ban for being sent off. When will the punishment be handed out? When will the bans start? How long will the bans be for? PP will have to pray over Easter for a happy conclusion to this one as the Cup is our only hope for glory this season as our league position now looks desperate. 08/04 Dundalk game Tuesday night might have to be played behind closed doors because of the foot and mouth scare in Louth. It might also effect the Drogheda United home match on Saturday night. With no supporters at these games it would be like playing in many of the National League grounds in the First Division. Limerick, Home Farm, St Francis, Cobh and Monaghan are well used to this situation but it will be a new experience for the Waterford players. 21/03 Blues match with Cobh in Cup Quarter final gets go ahead on Sunday 25th March at 3pm. Full squad available to PP as we go in search of European qualification by winning the Blue ribbon event, or meeting Shelbourne in final. 15/02 Major Fund raiser in RSC on Good Friday. A Soccer marathon is to be held on the 13th April in the RSC. Schoolboys and Schoolgirls, factories/Businesses/Students, and Pubs will all have their own sections. !0 players on each team to play a 7 aside match, subs when needed, each player must either raise or donate £20.00 to play. For all participants a draw for 10 super prizes will be held on the day. Further information when available. Lets help the Blues raise some needed cash. 12/02 It has just been announced that the RSC will host an International U21 match in July 2001. Ireland will play the very skilful Portugal team which should be a great spectacle for all soccer fans in the South East. 10/02 David Whittle will miss the FAI Cup replay with UCD after his appeal fell on deaf ears and is suspended from the 20th February (date of cup replay) for two matches. On the bright side Clive Delaney (UCD) has also been suspended for one game from this date. So a player off both sides, better than three off ours if the high winds hadn't appeared last Tuesday morning (nice one). 08/02 Three big games within a week for Blues, Home Farm (away), Athlone Town (Home) and Cobh Ramblers (home). Seven points needed from these games to stay in 3rd place and cement our playoff hopes. 06/02 The Blues Cup game has been postponed and will now take place on Tuesday 20th February as UCD play the League Cup final 2nd leg next week. 05/02 Alan Reynolds, Kevin Whittle and Paul Scully out for Cup replay 04/02 Blues drawn AWAY against Athlone Town or Cobh Ramblers in Quarter final 02/02 Gerry Goodwin suspended for one match starting 4th February 31/01 Brendan Rea is back in the squad for the Cup match versus UCD 27/01 Moroney left on bench as Watson scores again. 25/01 Kevin Whittle suspended for two matches. David appeals his sending off. 23/01 U.C.D. game on Sunday 4th February in Belfield @ 3.15pm. |
