UCC Volleyball Club is the official volleyball club for students of University College,
Cork. Officially, only students and postgrads are allowed to join but, with permission
from UCC Athletic Union, staff and outsiders may play.

There is an average membership of 30, swelling to 60 or 70 at the start of the year when
a lot of students take up volleyball for the first time. At the end of each year, when the
foreign exchange students leave, there is an average core membership of 10-15
irish/permanent students.

UCCVC is funded by the Athletic Union of UCC and this money goes towards entry, travel and
accommodation for the various tournaments and leagues we decide to participate in each year.

Because of our lack of facilities and the big membership, volleyball training times have to
be divided between the intervarsity squad and the beginners. We do, however, keep some times
for playing friendly games so that the two groups can be integrated to some extent.

This is all about to change though, with the current construction of the new Sports centre,
which is due to be completed in 14 months time The Volleyball club and other clubs will have
the proper facilities to host tournaments and to help the growth of the sport in Cork

Volleyball is not as popular a sport in Ireland as it is in other countries although it is
gaining some recognition, particularly in schools and universities. In Cork there are about
5/6 clubs: UCC, Cork City, Kinsale, Donoughmore, Midleton, Skibbereen and Dunmanway. There is
an annual Cork League organised by Dan O'Mahony of Donoughmore VC for Cork Clubs. Last year
UCC Men's and Women's teams won their respective groups.

Above all, the club's purpose is to provide enjoyment and physical education to the students
through playing volleyball whether competitively or not. Of course, the enjoyment continues
off court as well. Read about our members' bizarre behaviour on the tournaments page.
