Work Experience

March 1999 - present     Development Engineer     Ferrotec Ltd., Dublin
Software development in C (with some RISC assembly). Development is typically on a PC linked the embedded platfrom, a hyperstone CPU based system, using specially developed compiler, linker and debugger. Where needed I created PC based tools to convert or format data. Projects are divided up on a module basis where an engineer is responsible for concept
Part of pan-European projects sponsored by the E.U. including Discus and Homenet.

Mailpad
This is the main product under development at Ferrotec. Currently, I am the Main developer of this project and am involved in all aspects of its development. This is an integrated home/mobile approach to e-mail. Its features include TV, and LCD output, keypad, Infrared keyboard, standard PC-card modem with fixed line and mobile connections, and optional web browser. I was the developer for Infra-red keyboard and mouse, battery, sound and e-mail parsing modules. Partly responsible for Addressbook, key input handling, LCD modules.

September 1998 – February 1999      Software Engineer     TMC technology Ltd., Cork
Software development engineering. My main project involvement is described below. During this project I was involved in the software system concept for a SCSI cable tester, electronics design, PCB layout, software design, system manufacture. I also worked in Telephone support, general PC repairs and upgrading. At this time the company was undertaking industrial projects.

SCSI Cable tester
This device was used to test for data errors, on an extended SCSI cable. This used an embedded i386ex processor as the heart of a stand-alone SCSI-3 logic tester on extended length industrial cable. The embedded code was written in a combination of 80x86 assembly language and C. There was also a PC interface using the parallel port, logging of errors and control and device which I wrote using DJGPP, PC port of the GNU C++ compiler.

April '97 - August '97      Software Tester    Apple Computer Ltd., Cork
I was involved with software testing in a team-orientated environment. Besides work on the latest operating system release, I worked on European location and Customer Integration Testing. In addition, I completed Training courses on Res-edit with basic Codewarrior use and Java.

Summer '88 - '96
I have worked full-time as a general operative for a building contractor and attained extra responsibility as more experience was gained. I also participate in the family business on many levels, including computerising the accounts and doing general office work.

Final Year Project
This was a project sponsored by Computer Products Ltd., Youghal . The project entailed the controlling of an industrial power converter(an analogue Switch Mode power supply), using a Texas instruments DSP chip ( TMS320C50 ) to implement the control. This project involved power electronics, digital electronics, design of pre-amplifiers and coding the DSP chip through assembler. The project was later used in production.
