Ulysses Chamber Choir is always looking for good choral singers to augment and improve the choir. At present, we’re particularly on the lookout for sopranos and tenors, but we’d also like to hear from altos and basses who are interested in joining us. We look for the following qualities in potential members:
Motivation - we’re looking for singers who love music and choral singing, who value musical excellence and are prepared to work hard to achieve it.
Commitment-potential members must be willing to commit to punctual attendance at rehearsals, workshops and performances, and to work on the music at home.
Singing ability-we’re not looking for soloists with professionally trained voices. However, potential members should have a good natural singing voice, be able to sing in tune and blend with other voices.
Experience - previous experience of choral singing is essential.
Musicality - the ability to sight-read is desirable, though not essential. However, an understanding of the basics of musical notation is expected.
Openness - potential members should be open to a broad range of musical styles. The ‘repertoire’ section of our website will give you a good idea of the type of music we perform.
Entry to the choir is by audition.
What does the audition involve?
Before auditioning, we encourage people to attend a trial rehearsal. Then, should you wish to audition, you can do it on the night or come back the following week. The audition itself is quite straightforward and consists of some ear tests and a sight reading assessment (although sight-reading is not a requirement!).
When and where do you rehearse?
We rehearse every Tuesday evening from 6.45 at Ely House Ely Place, Dublin 2. We occasionally have an alternative venue but always city centre.
What are the rehearsals like?
Rehearsals are 2 hours long. We do quite a lot of unaccompanied singing and while sight reading is not a perquisite, you will need to have a reasonable knowledge of the basics of musical notation.
Our MD is an accomplished professional pianist and organist but we try not to spend too much time bashing notes at rehearsal. That means that there is an expectation that you will do some work at home reviewing what’s been covered in rehearsal.
What financial obligations do you expect from members?
Members are required to pay an average subscription fee of around €80 per term (that’s no more than €250 for the year). You can pay on a weekly basis (around €6) or by term and concessions are available.
Members are also required to purchase their own music. This is organised through the choir at a discounted rate. Music costs on average have been as low as €15 and no more than €30 (for the whole year).
Are there any solo opportunities?
We regularly give concerts in which there are solo opportunities. While we generally try to give opportunities to up and coming singing students for these solos, occasionally there are opportunities for members of the choir. These could range from a few bars to something more substantial.
What is the social side like?
Aside from regular post-rehearsal drinks in Ely, we organise parties and trips away. These social events are an important part of Ulysses.
