School hinterland

 

 

 

 

S.N. Bhride is a small rural school in the village of Union Hall on the S.W. coast of Co. Cork. It is situated 7 miles S.E. of Skibbereen and 5 miles west of Rosscarbery. It opened is doors in 1989,having taken thre years to build and it was officially opened in June 1992. The building has four classrooms and a activity hall . There is a staff room, an office, a kitchen , and five equpment rooms. Each classroom has a large library and pupils are allowed to borrow books to read at home. The school also has a large number of networked computers which are used by the pupils.

At the moment there are 83 pupiles in the school aged from 4 to 13. Most of our pupils come from the hinterland around the school and are Irish born but we also have children from vietnam and England. There are six teachers, four mainstream one learning support and one resource, plus one special needs assistant.. Each mainstrem teacher has two classes. The learning support teacher is based inthe school and isshared with Leap, Castletownsend and Baltimore while the resorce teacher is based in Castletownsend and shared with us.
The subjects we study are Irish, English, Maths, Religon, Nature, P.E., S.P.H.E. Art/Craft/Sewing andScience . Third, fourth, fifth and sixth classes also studyHistory and Geography. We also do extra curriculum activites such as drama , tin whistle , Irishdancing and swimming.
The uniform consists of a grey shirt and a pants for the baoys as well as wine jumper and tie. The girls have the option of wearing a knee length skirt/penifore or a straight legged pants as well as a cardigan.
School begins at 9.20 am and ends at 3.00 pm. Lunch break is from 12.30p.m. to 1.00p.m. and there is also a ten minute brek at 11.00a.m.We have two big yards to play in .
The school is surrounded by a large lawn which is dotted with many species of trees such as ash, oak, silver birch, copper beech, fern leafed birch, rown tree maple, lime etc.Ther are also flower beds within the school grounds which are attended to by the pupils. Children are preapred for the sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation but we also caer for children of other religous denominations.
