For a number of years in
Scouting Ireland CSI we tried organizing One World Workshops to get give
venturers and leaders alike ideas for making a difference. Some of these were extremely successful but
most were very poorly attended. In order to make a
difference and contribute we decided a couple of years ago to ask you to do
something you liked doing and pay us for the privilege. Groups have organised hikes all over
the country and charged their members for taking part. Some groups have had very successful
unit events, or hikes where they invited parents or friends, or fancy dress
hikes. All have enjoyed the day and
contributed to an organisation that are working directly with young people
in developing countries. Last year
we supported the Red Cross and the previous year it was Unicef. This year all your contributions will
go to CRADLE who work supporting the children of Chernobyl. Enjoy your day and do
something that will benefit those less well off ! One World Week is
from the 18th to the 25th of November, 2000. One World Week is a week of
youth-led awareness raising education and action on issues of human rights
and justice both local and global that takes place during the third week of
November every year. During One
World Week youth leaders, community workers, teachers, development workers,
students and young people throughout Ireland learn about local and global
issues and take action to effect change.
The theme this year is
MEDIA. It is about enabling young
people to analyse how they get their information and the forms that such
information takes. Media can work
to keep the world the way it is: supporting the powerful and excluding the
powerless, however media can also work to promote justice a free media is
a prerequisite for human rights.
Therefore the One World Week campaign 2000 Are you Watching Big
Brother? is focused on those who make and control the media. It calls on young people to watch those
who control the media, watching how the media informs us about the world,
watching out for those who are excluded from view the peoples of the
developing world and young people in Ireland. If you would like more
