Saint Patrick’s Day.

A trip to the Táin Carlingford

16th 17th 18th March.

7 Venturers from 153rd Lusk unit headed for The Táin Village on Thursday the 16th of March. After thieving an Icelandic from the store room in the den we got into our vehicles and headed for the Táin. There was a fierce amount of phone calls between the vehicles trying to sort out navigation. On the way up we were tuned in to Tracy Chapman. After arriving we set up the tents. Then we “borrowed” a picnic table and put it in the Icelandic, as our mini-kitchen. So after a bit of messing in the playground it was late and time for bed. The next morning we woke up to the sound of a donkey. Today was hike day, yeah, nothing like a mountain for Saint Patrick’s Day. We ate some breakfast and prepared lunch for the hike. We left the Táin centre and walked along the main road for a while. We arrived at the Coillte forest and ascended up the mountain. With a spectacular view from the top of the mountain those (meaning leaders) smoked their cigar on top of a huge rock. Then there was a few phone calls made on the mobiles. A few clicks of the camera and then we had lunch in a remote location. We descended and got ready for the swimming pool. The swimming pool was really rancho relaxo with a steam room as well as the pool. We then had a Saint Patrick’s Day

barbeque ventuers style. Plenty of rolls, sausages, burgers etc. Ney bother to us. That evening was spent playing games in the arcade as well as a bit of GAA football. We also wandered around the village for a while sober of course because it was a venturing weekend. We retired that evening after more messing in the playground. The following day we packed up and head home.

Barry,

Go on the girls!

Baden Powell himself would be turning in his grave if he knew that the girls are not only matching the boys, but are leading the way in typical Venturer fashion. Venturers are the Section in the 153rd Lusk Scout Unit catering for 16 to 19 years olds and comprise of 15 members and 3 leaders.

Its no joke, on April the 1st last Laura Devane, Aoibhinn Bird, Niamh Carroll, Eimear Carroll and Aine O’Donavan along with Leader Therese Courtney took part in ‘Sleibhte North’, a national hike, climbing one of the four highest peaks in the land. This involved an overnight camp in Tollymore Forest Park, Newcastle Co Down and an accent up the highest peak in the North ‘Sliabh Donard’. The assault on this arduous peak was lead by the one armed Veteran Brian O’Donavan who successfully managed to keep all groups motivated. No such problem for the Lusk girls who are managing to develop there social skills quite expressively and have made many friends at this National event. It has to be added that some have all ready this year conquered the dizzy peak of Carrantouhil, Co Kerry. Coincidentally it is the first time any Venturers in the group have reached the highest summit in Ireland. Rumor now has it that the girls are putting together a plan to take the South face of Everest!

However all is not lost lads! Barry Murphy the chairman of the group and his merry men have been seen oiling up their bikes in preparation for the Venturer coast to coast cycle, which is taking place over the Easter, from Sligo to Dublin. Also in the pipeline we are due a very special visitor from our twinned group in Kircheeson, Munich who we met on last years summer expedition. Verena Hammerl is due in on Sunday the 15th of April and the entire group would like to extend our warm welcome. Verena undoubtedly contributed in making our stay in Kircheeson a memorable one.  She just may also be the key to motivating the boys!
