Latest News:

Ø     A meet was arranged with the County Roads Engineer on Thursday 19th June. Two members of the group (one from Ardcath, one from Clonalvy) volunteered to meet with the Engineer. He was shown the issues related to road safety throughout the area, primarily at Ardcath School and Clonalvy School. The two local volunteers made sure the Engineer was clear on the road safety issues that we have in the area. Public lighting, footpaths, road conditions were all highlighted to the Road Engineer.

The day after the Engineers visit, the Council cut the hedging at the crossroads leaving Ardcath for Garristown (or Clonalvy) was cut well back to allow improved visibility. This dangerous junction has been raised at Council meetings and funding has been applied for under the 'Low Cost Safety Scheme' to improve the layout of the junction. The council also cut the hedging back along the public footpath in Ardcath which had been in a dangerous condition due to thorns growing across the path making.

Ø     There is hope that pressure from our County Councillors will bring forward the School Safety Program (Flashing Lights) for Ardcath and Clonalvy

Ø     Volunteers are sought for a proposed Rural Security Scheme in which 'Local Guides' will be used by Gardai to locate houses of people in the local area who have called for Garda assistance. Further details to follow.

Tuesday 20th May 2008:

ArdClon Action Group meeting on 20th May 2008

A meeting of the ArdClon Action Group took place in Clonalvy on Tuesday 20th May 2008.
A six-point issue list was drawn up to summarise the current issues in the area.
The heading for each of these points is given below.

Ø      Road Safety of National Schools in both communities. The main concern here is for the protection of school set down areas.  There is a serious lack of notification when approaching the schools in both areas for drivers.  More signage is needed to rectify this. Also due to the speed of most vehicles in the areas of both National Schools the provision of ramps and clear speed limitation would be the only way to reduced speed on both approaches to the schools.

Ø      Footpaths.  The reinstatement of the footpath leading from Clonalvy National School to the centre of the village.  This footpath has fallen into a sad state of disrepair over the last few decades.  Also the construction of a footpath from Church View Estate, Ardcath, to National School in Ardcath.

Ø      Anti-Social Behavior. Speeding vehicles through both villages and past both of the National Schools is a great concern to our communities.  We also feel there should be a no-loitering sign for both school set -down areas.  This would enable the Gardai to enforce this legally due to the fact that illegal activities are being undertaken outside both schools and the old shop in  Ardcath, principally involving drugs (evidence found in school set-down areas)

Ø      Public Lighting.  There is a lack of adequate lighting provided by the Council at both the entry and exit of both villages. This would be a serious concern for pedestrians.

Ø      Verge and Hedge Cutting.   Visibility of on-coming traffic is severely restricted due to the length and height of the verges and hedging in both localities but in particular at the crossroads near Ardcath on the Garristown road.

Ø      Water supply.   Lack of water quality and pressure in both areas.  Water pressure and quality has been reduced considerably for the last few months in both areas.

Shane McEntee T.D. (Fine Gael spokesperson on Road Safety), Senator Dominic

Hannigan (Labour), Councillor Eoin Holmes (Labour) and all local Councillors' have been

sent this issue list, we are now waiting for action.
