Golden Mile Summer Series - Week 5, Thursday June 5th.
27 lunatics, myself included, turned up in Kilmacow for week 5 of the Golden Mile Series. 25 of these completed the mile, we won't pass any remarks about the Colbert's women, except to say that maybe they actually had the right idea!
The weather was horrendous but in no way dented the enthusiasm and the fun, even though there wasn't one pb among the lot of us. The first race saw the comeback of our favourite Milkman from injury, Joe Ryan (6.42). Unless I'm mistaken he was the only one smiling each of the 4 times he passed by us lookers-on, hunched over, trying to get some shelter beside a hedge! I suppose we did look kinda funny! Joe led home a cross section of young and old, male and female, a veritable Pied Piper! Oliver O'Brien had a great run in 7.19 and was followed in by Liam Quinn, Maura O'Doherty, who no doubt wished her company's name would have some bearing on the weather (SunLife!) and the indomitable Francie Lonergan.
In race 2 James McGuire's results are subject to the results of a drug test to be conducted by Al Guy as soon as he can find said athlete. James stormed around the track, with very even laps to finish in a time of 6.24 after letting Alan lead the group for the first lap. Alan Everett led Seamie and Shem on a merry dance before finishing. Shem then just managed to pip Seamie in the last few meters...everybody cleere? The fastest race of the night was won by Mark Langford in 5.03, from Larry Kennedy in 5.18. Mark led for the whole race and didn't seem in the slightest bit impeded by the conditions. Aaron Colbert narrowly missed out on 3rd place which went to Owen Casey in 5.22, no doubt guaranteeing his grub for the week. Anyone remember Aaron saying something about having great stamina when Helena had to make a pit stop? Eoin Palmer showed his strength, again finishing before medal winner Conor Casey.
In race 4 Eoghan Quinn took a break, a very nifty 5.27 break, from his Junior Cert studies to claim victory over a raggle taggle group of juvenile Kevin Cooper, not so juvenile Liam Whitty ;-), Des (who might have some convincing to do to get Niamh out running again!) Colbert and bringing up the rear, eventually, Adele Walsh. Good luck with the rest of the exams Eoghan!
Nicholas Halley didn't have too far to travel to Kilmacow and showed his familiarity with the track in the last race of the night, coming home first in a time of 6.01, terrific going on grass. Gerry Fitzgerald and Bobby Coady both put the foot down coming down the home straight, with Gerry managing to catch Joanne Jackman on the line and Bobby coming in 2 seconds behind. Mark Halley (was it Mark that had the battered knee earlier?)  finished in a more than respectable 6.48. No doubt everyone is looking forward to a return to the RSC track next week,  nonetheless the night was certainly enjoyable and thanks again to John Walsh and St.Senans for use of the track and facilities.
