Golden Mile Summer Series - Week 3,
Thursday May 20th. The Golden Mile Series continued out on the green, green, grass of Kilmacow. For one night only the competitors graced the grass track while the Waterford Schools competed at the RSC. Thankfully the rain Gods didn't dampen the night as they did last year and the 28 people that made the trip across the bridge were rewarded with some great races. With help from Derek Tebay they lined up between 3 races. Race 1 Geraldine Kiely showed no need for the handicap Derek had allowed her, storming to the finish line in a ladies best for the night of 5.53. Tebay eile, Albert finished under the 6 minute mark, as did Connie Kelleher and Joanne Jackman. Just the other side of 6 minutes were St.Senanians Bobby Coady and John Wallis as well as an ever improving Peter Murphy and James Maguire. Race 2 Again a handicap system was in place to ensure runners finished close enough together. Newcomer and juvenile, John Ryan finished first just 8 seconds ahead of Dave Forristal, who broke the 7min barrier for the first time. Crossing the line together for third place were Alec Crosse and Shane Tebay. Valerie Tebay was next across the line, improving on last weeks time despite the grass track. another juvenile, Oliver was closely followed in by Tara Walsh and Deirdre Chapman. A closely fought battle between Paul Murphy, John Stephenson and Alan Everett saw them separated by just 1s. Niamh O'Mahoney continues to show an improvement each week finishing 3s faster than last week. Keep it up! Race 3 As always, we left the best till last, or at least the most interesting! No doubt because it was on home soil, Bill Lacey felt the need to prove his ability, and did so with gusto, holding off another former Kilkenny athlete Nicholas Halley to take forst place by a mere second. Conor Reidy stayed ahead of Michael Halley to take 3rd. Another infamous Kilkenny man, PJ Dwyer showed he can run as good as he can walk to finish just ahead of Brian Swaby. John Dalton stayed ahead of a sprinting Wayne Allen to finish in 5.09. See how they all did here. This week's mile will take place at the RSC as usual, Thursday, May 27th, at 6.30pm. Back to News |
