Friday July 18th,
Glaxo Smithkline 5M, Ger Wyley/Nike Summer Series, Race 8 The race started out in the usual spitting rain, but thankfully cleared up before the end allowing for some of our runners to stride neatly home to the finish. Apart, that is, from our Garda presence, who was not only misdirected during the race by another competitor, who shall remain unnamed, suffice to say, he's a butcher, but also managed to do some hurling along the route! 22 of our usual brave runners turned up on the night despite the conditions, for a race over one of the flattest courses of the Series, allowing for many a good finishing time. Mark Langford and Joanne Jackman were the first home (again!) in the male and female categories. Mark picked up a prize for 5th place and was very closely followed by uncle (well to all intents and purposes!) Larry Kennedy, who won the O/40 section. Next home was Des Colbert, who has finally admitted to being a 'runner' after recent reports of his refusing free drink at a work night out. Des, no doubt spurred on by another improver, Liam Power, hot on his heels, finished in 30.22, with Liam 17s behind. Lisa and Graham Power, watching from the sidelines, were no doubt delighted at their Dad's terrific finish. Joanne finished 3rd overall in the ladies with another terrific time of 31.33....watch out Jakie! Tom O'Brien finished a little behind his Dromana time but at a very even pace nonetheless. Adele Walsh gained an XL t-shirt for 5th place and went home wondering whether it was meant as a hint, or as a suggestion?! Right behind Adele was another lovely bevvie, PJ Irish, who finished just seconds in front of Paul Mooney. Pat Giles, absent from the racing scene for a while, marked his return with a brilliant 32.47. Brendan Aspel, returning with a fantastic tan from abroad (I'm jealous!), managed a great run in 34.05, despite all that lounging around on beaches. WRR organisers, Bobby Coady and Seamie Cooper showed that a few extra pounds make no difference, with the Kilkenny Club member finishing well ahead of his Waterford counterpart! Alan Everett won the O/55 section in a time of 35.08, no doubt pushed on by the sounds from behind as Declan Harte finished 11s later. New to road racing, and with interests in golf, pitch and putt (aren't they all the same?) and dogs, Wayne Allen just pipped the more experienced James Maguire to the line. Davy Foley, helped by some mid week training on the pitches at Waterford Glass, finished next in 36.38. Maura O'Doherty played cat and mouse with another Cork woman throughout the race before digging deep to finish well ahead, leaving the Youghal woman to lick her wounds. James Fitzgerald, much improved on Dromana's run, finished in 41.42, leaving Tim Sherman last home of the WRR but first in the O/60s section. Well done Tim and everyone else. See you all in Ballymacarbry on August 4th at 7.30pm. Check out the full list of WRR and top 3 male and female finishing times here. Complete set of results from West Waterford AC available here.
