Saturday
May 1st, Waterford to Tramore, Ger Wyley/Nike Summer Series Race 2
Thankfully the rain Gods didn't rear their heads this year and the turnout on the night certainly reflected this. 179 finishers, a definite increase on last year! A massive 37 of these were Road Runners, 15 up on last year! Just shows how much the Winter Leagues over the past few years have been responsible for. Mark Langford and Joanne Jackman had a photo (frame!) finish, both getting third in their sections, both improving significantly on last year's times. Aaron Colbert, Michael Halley and Frank Walsh were next in for the male Road Runners and claimed first team prize in the process. All a credit to Waterford AC who probably didn't even have a team last year. The next 9 Road Runners home were also WAC, John Kinsella, Michael McGrath, David 'Stretch' Drohan, Darryl Hale, Conor Reidy, Brendan Aspel, Pat Giles, Brian 'Start-Stop' Swaby and Gerry Fitzgerald. Hot on Gerry's heels was Joanne Jackman (WWAC) who was followed in by the dashing Con Kelleher, also WWAC. A recent transfer to Ferrybank AC, Nicholas Halley showed he's just getting warmed up for the season finishing just in 50minutes. Kilkenny man PJ Dwyer (St.Senan's) had a very comfortable run to finish a half minute ahead of WAC's Colm Cheevers. Tullamore Harriers Vet Mick Neville yet again proved that age is no barrier and finished with an average of a 6.52min mile. Many, many of use would be glad to even come close to that average. Next in were a couple of veteran Cats, Bill Lacey and Bobby Coady (both St.Senan's). Neither got the cream though as both were rumoured to have been confined to their beds the following day! Tramore man Michael Flynn must have been glad to get home, finishing in 54.30. Our thoughts and sympathies go to the next Road Runner home, Alan Everett, on his recent bereavement. Alan's mother passed away the night after the race. Ar dheis sí go raibh sí. Albert Tebay and John Wallis (St.Senan's) were separated by only 8s and were followed home by Frank Walsh and Stephen Elliot. Good to see all this year's new Winter Leaguers still getting out and competing! Brenda, the more attractive of the Lowe couple, made the most of the last couple of miles to steal away from Shelly Brennan, Michael Leechmere and hubby Cathal. Joe 'Strider' Cawley and Maura O'Doherty were the last 2 Road Runners to make it in under the hour mark. Well done guys! On the other side
of the hour were Deirdre Chapman, Cathleen Moran and Alec Crosse, all
displaying the benefits of the weekly Wednesday runs from the RSC!
Well done to all!. Next up is the Butlerstown 10k on May 22nd. See you
there! |
