Road Runners Winter League Week 1, Wednesday November 10th

Best EVER Winter League Opening Night!

Record Breaking Start!
Despite the extra advertising undertaken by Waterford AC and the Road Runners, no one could have forecasted that almost 160 people would arrive at the RSC last Wednesday evening. It was a cold but absolutely idyllic night for running!
The organisers were under the cosh to have everyone registered, numbered and visible by 7pm, but they did, and with tremendous success.
All participants were warmly welcomed by Bobby Coady and advised of the safety procedures in place, which included running on the footpaths and wearing visible vests! With new signage and increased numbers of course marshalls, both 3 and 5 mile routes were safely negotiated by all runners.

3 Mile
47 men and women rushed out the left side of the Cork Road to Sheridan's Garage and back down. First of these home was Paul Devlin, a newcomer to both Waterford and the Winter League but not to running having done plenty on a sojourn down unda'. Within a minute the next 2 top spots were taken by Dermot O'Byrne and James Ryan, with Dermot just managing to hold James off.
In an impressive return to the Winter League Niamh Hearne was the first lady to cross the 2004 finish line, closely followed by marathon runner Deirdre Chapman, who was apparently off form due to a bad burger, eaten 20minutes before the race. Dee mustn't have been reading her running magazines! Hot on Dee's heels was Power-ful Mags on her first outing.

Hospitalised
Well done to the WRH contingent that came along on the night. Valerie Furlong, Karen McGrath, Sinead Roynane, Orla Kavanagh, Mary Burke and hubbie Michael all discarded their crisp whites for leggings and t-shirts. Beth O'Leary and Maire Herterich were also 'persuaded' to run by the gentle Dee Chapman! The Burkes were the only 2 to attempt the 5mile distance. Unconfirmed reports have stated that Michael has offered Mary a substantial amount of cash to let him beat her next week.

Longer but no slower!
An amazing 105 runners (including 2 walkers) tackled the undulating 5 mile course. Looking to make an impression on this year's League was WAC's Shane Power, just a hair's breadth ahead of newcomers John Shanahan and Jim Baldwin. It would seem that some of our usual speedies decided on an easy night, so no doubt there will be some good battles at the top before the end of the League.
Andy Capper will look after all these guys tonight, making sure that choosing a winner is as tricky as winning the lotto.

In the fairer field, Marina Power was first home ahead of Joanne Jackman of WWAC. Should be interesting to see how these athletes perform when warmed up after a few more races! They'll have to watch their back though, with just 2 minutes separating them from the up and coming WAC ladies, Collette Holland and Brenda Lowe, it looks like there could be skin and hair flying soon! Both Brenda and Cathal Lowe must be doing some secret training to have maintained such great times after a quiet summer. We wonder what kind of interval sessions they do?

The word is out
With entrants from as far afield as Ballynonty, Co. Tipp it's obvious that word of the Winter League has spread, and spread positively. We would sincerely like to thank all those that promoted it thus far, whether it's with newspaper articles, on radio or simply by word of mouth. You can stop now though!! Only kidding, the more the merrier! All are reminded of the goal of the League, to promote running in Waterford and beyond, so spread the word. Remember, it's not a competition!

Volunteers Required
With so many participants, special attention has been given to the safety aspect of the League. Last week Waterford AC very kindly attended the roads. Tonight's marshalls have been organised by Cathal Lowe. Sincere thanks to both groups. At the moment marshalls for November 24th have not been designated. If you would like to volunteer your services, in lieu of racing for one night, please notify one of the organisers at any night's run. A list will be posted each night of who is due to marshall the following week. For those concerned with running the 8 races required to be considered for a prize at the end of the League, don't be. If you marshall any night or indeed help out with recording the results, we will considered that as a race run and will be more than grateful!

Full results are below, check back for more Winter League news soon. Till then....keep on runnin'!
