Road Runners
Winter League Week 10, Wednesday January 26th
New
men's
and women's 5 mile course times for the year!
Speedy
night!
On a night perfect for running and riddled with new personal bests and
course bests for the year, last Wednesday proved a most successful night
all round! With the end of the league drawing close, 118 runners lined
up on both sides of the Cork Road to try to better their previous runs
and unbelievably, 52 people ran either a personal best, or a course best
for the year. To repeat that for effect, 44% of last Wednesday's
entrants improved on their previous best. How encouraging is that?! Well
done to all!
5 Miles -
Group 1
Displaying another remarkable improvement and leaving her husband for
dust yet again, was Mary Burke, who, having moved up into Group 1 just
this week, proved she's most certainly not out of place there by being
the first lady home. Not far behind and dropping over 2 mins off her
year's best was Chelly Brennan. Investigations into Chelly's secret
training Chelly are under way by certain Gardai in the Tramore area and
a report will be sent to the DPP. Collette Holland also improved to take
3rd spot. Despite setting a terrific new ladies course record and being
fastest on the night, Marina Power's coming 4th in 31.45 demonstrates
the improvement of the top 4!
The men were led home by none other than Tim Sherman, 3rd last week, who
had a great run to stay ahead of the chasing pack. In second and 3rd
place were recent newcomers, Derek Finn and Darren Waugh whose finishing
times were exactly 1 minute apart. In 4th and 5th place, warranting a
mention in light of their fantastic improvement since last November,
were John Stephenson and Seamus Mason, who ran 35.16 and 35.52
respectively. Both have been great supporters of the Winter League over
the last few years and we're delighted to see such progress, which is
what the league is all about. Others with notable personal bests down
the line include Michael McGrath(29.37), Brian Deveraux(34.20), Darryl
Hale(30.34) , Nicholas Halley(30.35) , Eoin Palmer(30.36), Des
Colbert(28.08), Larry Kennedy(28.09), Lory O'Hanlon(34.57), PJ
Dwyer(30.44), Davey Foley(35.23), Pat Trihy(35.54), Alan
Kavanagh(34.09), Frankie Walsh(34.42), Ronan O'Brien(35.27) and John
Walton (WAC)(27.04). One man of course had more than a personal best.
Looking back across recorded results since the 2002/2003 Winter League,
Mark Langford topped the course record by a few seconds to finish in
25.41. Imagine what this guy is capable of in a real race situation!
Keep it up Mark!
Group 2
Again Group 2 was riddled with improvements, with Andy Vereker
striding home in first place, up 2 places on last week. In 2nd and 3rd
were Maurice O'Donnell and Frank Tritschler, knocking 3 minutes and
1.5mins off their previous respective bests.
The women were no different, with Maria Walsh most definitely returned
to form coming home to take top spot and Martina Fanning and last year's
winner Bridget Phelan taking 2nd and 3rd places. With only 3 seconds
separating Bridget and Martina last week, both will start together
tonight on the same handicap, should prove for an interesting race!
Good to see Alec Crosse maintain his recent spat of sub 40min runs, keep
it up Alec!
3 Miles
James Connors stepped up from 2nd place the previous week to
take gold last week ahead of all other 3 milers. Hot on his heels though
was Helen Grimes, leading the ladies home for the 3rd consecutive week.
With this in mind, she'll pay heavily tonight with a big handicap!
Newcomer Amy Fitzgerald did brilliantly to take 2nd place just ahead of
last week's 2nd placer, Helena Dunphy. Helena is most definitely a role
model for any recent mothers out there!!
The 2nd and 3rd men home were both Michaels, Wadding and Burke,
respectively. Good to see the Burke husband and wife duo topping the
results across the 3 and 5 milers! There's surely great competitiveness
at home!
Fastest of the 3 milers on the night were Wayne Allen(19.18) and Sylvia
Malone (23.33).
1.5 weeks to
start of WWAC Spring Series
Don't forget, if you'd like to ramp up your training distance,
or even just maintain your recent progress, the West Waterford Athletic
Club Spring Series begins with a 10 mile road race in Dungarvan on
February 13th. If 10 miles is too much for you, there are 2 other 5
milers as well as a 10k in the following weeks. Check out their website
for further details, www.westwaterfordathletics.org.

Word of warning !!
There were a couple of potentially very dangerous incidents last week on
the Cork Road by the lights at Ballybeg. While the marshalls are there
to help make traffic aware of what is happening and to encourage them to
stop while you steam past, the ultimate responsibility rests on your own
shoulders. DO NOT ASSUME that because there are marshalls at a junction
it is safe to proceed. Many drivers will continue driving through a
junction or with a green light, whether or not there is a marshall
present. YOU have you make sure your way through a junction is clear
before storming through. One or two runners will be approached this week
regarding their own and others safety. If you think you might be one of
these people, please think twice and look twice next time you approach a
junction. Thanks!
Have you
your 8 runs done??
If you've only 5 runs done, with only 3 weeks left, you need to
turn up at all three to be in with a chance to win a prize at the end of
the League. If you haven't run with us at all yet, it's still not to
late to enter and join in for the last 3 weeks to get a flavour of
what's on offer! Just bring your runners and 5euro to the RSC on the
Cork Road tonight at 6.30pm.
The final night of the league and prize-giving night is February 16th,
so book those babysitters!
Check out www.waterfordroadrunners.ie for further updates and
information on upcoming runs. Thanks most kindly to the Gardai and all
the marshalls that arrived to help out last week. Marshalls included,
Attie Jackman, Graham Coady's friend(!), Alan Everett, Gerry Madden, Con
Kelleher and Stephen Elliott. Thanks also to Cathal Lowe and Deirdre
Chapman for looking after the entries and results! Don't forget that a
night marshalling or helping with results will count as a race run, so
even if you're injured you can come along and enjoy the night from a
different perspective!
