Road Runners Winter League Week 2, Wednesday November 17th

Another fantastic turnout for Week 2!

Bigger than ever!
After only 2 weeks, this year's numbers have already topped previous year's. Thanks to all those who are spreading the word! It meant that another record 150 people entered and completed last week's 3 and 5 miles routes. It was another ideal night for running and it showed it the times recorded. Speaking of recording, thanks must go to our stand-in timekeeper, Cornelius Kelleher, for his precise and exacting time calling. Marshalling this week was carried out by our stalwart, Fintan Walsh, newly interred Daddy Jackman and some runners who took the night off pounding the roads, to instead steward them. These were Pat Keating, Alan Whelan, John Wallis, Andy Dollard, James Maguire and Des Colbert.

Andy Capper Last week's run introduced our handicap system to the runners. The aim being to ensure that most finish together and no-one is left out on the course alone. Due to the high numbers running the 5 mile route, we had to have two sets of handicaps, which explains the variance in start times. Andy was a little slow though, and slipped up on some of the new arrivals. Not to worry, these will be 'punished' with tougher start times tonight!

3 Mile
'Will I won't I?' ran through Emer Lodge's mind for some time before finally deciding not to dive head first into the 5 mile route. Instead, newcomer Emer dashed to first place on the 3 mile route, with no one ahead to slow her down. She won't be so lucky this week though, a 5.5min handicap should make it a bit tougher! Next of the ladies home was Sylvia Malone who knocked a fantastic 2 minutes of her time from the first week. Not far behind her was Eva Lalor, who reduced her time by even more. That's the whole idea girls, keep it up! Young Ian Walsh managed to somehow sweet talk the ladies handing out the handicaps and sped home, first of the men. Hot on his heels were Martin Flynn and Clyde Casey, with Martin just managing to hold off Clyde by a mere 2secs. Martin's time improved by almost 3 minutes in a week, so I'm sure there's more in the tank!

A Family Affair
Though Derek couldn't make it to look after the timekeeping, brother Albert and 2 of his family took part, while Dad, Tommy Tebay presided over recording the bib numbers on the line. Valerie Tebay and son Shane, lined up a minute apart on the 3 mile start line, Val with a 1 minute head start. She stayed ahead of Shane and will pay the penalty tonight by starting 30s after him! Should be interesting to see how this Mother/Son competition goes! Dad, Albert, in the meantime, was late arriving as usual, but made up for it by hare-ing around the 5 mile route in just under 35 minutes. It's wonderful to see the whole family involved. As soon as Niamh is old enough, drag her out for a few miles as well! Well done guys!

5 Miles
While the numbers on the 3 mile route increased, there was a slight drop in the 5 mile side of the road. No doubt we'll see this variance each week. Again Andy Capper was fooled into lower handicaps than required, but this won't happen again!

Group 1
First home, and urged on by a looming Parent-Teacher meeting was Michael Halley, on his first run in this year's series. Finishing well under 30mins, I'm sure we'll see his name near the top in the coming weeks also. Hope the Teachers were nice to you Michael! Another of WAC's current fliers was next home. John Dalton, complete with war wounds, blasted over the line in a brilliant 28.03, well ahead of last year's best of 29.12. Those sand dunes are paying off! Next up, looking to make a Mark on this year's series, was 'young' Langford. We look forward to another broken record before the end of the League.

Though the handicap system might have confused Collette Holland, there was no misunderstanding her 1st place. Knocking over a minute off last week's time she'll surely add to the mix in the ladies event before long. Must be that lovely Cross Country race that helped! Joanne Jackman, showing a splendid return to form repeated last week's second place honours and was followed by Marina Power a minute later.

Group 2
With 2 handicap systems in place for the 5 mile route, it means we have 2 sets of winners. In the second group Davey Foley steamed his way to first place, but earned himself a hefty handicap in the process! Albert Tebay just stayed ahead of Mark Boland and both have moved up to the first group with their speedy runs, well done guys. In the ladies section, newcomer Anne Fitzgerald was well clear of Mary Burke to claim the number 1 spot, and both were soon followed in by Sharon Sutton. All girls will have a tougher run tonight no doubt!

New Arrival
You might have noticed that a certain Arron Colbert was missing from the night's proceedings. This is in large part due to the fact that himself and Helena, another infamous Road Runner had a baby boy last week. Word is that he has already been enrolled in a special Athletics Academy and was seen cheering Dad on at last Sunday's Brickey run in Dungarvan! Congratulations to both of them and little baby Rossa!

Marshall…anyone?
With so many runners each week, we encourage you to take a night off and help out on the roads. If you would like to volunteer your services, in lieu of racing for one night, please notify one of the organisers at any night's run. One or two are still required for tonight and a full ensemble required for next week (December 1st). Don't forget if you marshall any night or indeed help out with recording the results, we will considered that as a race run and will be more than grateful!
