Great return to Winter League for 2006!

Terrific return to running for the new year
With 170 runners out last Thursday night, 24 of whom were new, it’s a sure sign that at least some new year’s resolutions remain unbroken. Weather conditions were not all that favourable for a good night’s running but nonetheless there were some good times all round with plenty of newbies and beginners hitting the hot spots.

Chelley’s return

With baby number 3 well settled into a routine in the Brennan household it was time Mom Chelley got back to the roads. Chelley obviously benefited greatly from whatever hormones are produced post-baby and stormed around the 2.5 mile route in just over 22 minutes to be the first roadrunner to the finish line in 2006. Hot on Chelley’s heels were two newbies who also had terrific runs and finished in under 24 minutes. All 3 top ladies will be hit with a tough handicap next time to make up for such a light one last Thursday.

Appearing, for one night only.
Feeling that the effects of the Christmas excesses wouldn’t allow him do justice to the 4.5 mile route, John Carew chickened out, I mean, decided to try his leg at the shorter distance instead. John whizzed home in under 20 minutes, with new road runner, Paul Curtayne not far behind. Third spot on the night was pretty much a dead heat between Honeywellers Anthony Stone and Declan Flanagan. These guys must have been doing some extra curricular training over Christmas as their times have improved by over 2 minutes. Well done lads and keep it up.

No dog excuses this time

The Winter League couldn’t be deemed a success without at least one run by the infamous, PJ ‘the dog ate my runner’ Irish. He was very impressed by the change of route, remarking that surely he couldn’t get lost this year on an out and back course. Those of you with us a few years might remember the same man running into Bausch and Lomb asking for directions out of the Industrial Estate! Looks like his calf injury is on the mend at long last also as he finished first, just a second under 33 minutes over the 4.5 mile route. Welcome back PJ!

G’day mate
Second home in the longer run was Seamus Doyle, having returned home from Australia, adding a much needed tanned, ‘throw a steak on the barbie’ quality to the night. Judging by his time it wasn’t all steaks and beer down under though as he sped around in 28.06. A good catch for any one on the lookout, for good club runners, of course. Mick Dwyer just managed to stay ahead of Fergus O’Connell for third place. Fergus’s time of 27.58 shows his that recovery from the marathon is complete.

Murphy’s Law
Adding to the international feel on the night was Niamh Murphy of Mayo AC. Her time of 29.04 is the fastest run by a lady on the new 4.5mile route thus far. No doubt there’ll be one or two ladies wanting a crack at a sub 29 time over the next few weeks, but they’ll have their work cut out for them as Niamh appeared to have plenty more left in the tank afterwards. In second place was Anne Fitzgerald, again, improving steadily each week. Not far behind Anne were Marie Furlong and Brenda Lowe. The 30s difference in these girls handicaps this week should prove interesting with Anne no doubt targeting Brenda to improve her time again. Friendly rivalry, there’s nothing like it!!

Another boy!
With Waterford AC’s future at the forefront of their minds Jean and Frank Walsh had another baby boy last week. Baby Ronan will have to put up with wearing Darragh’s hand-me-down club singlets and spikes when they follow in Dad’s footsteps in years to come. Congratulations Jean, Frank and Darragh!

League tables
This week will see the introduction of a league format to the Winter League as a way of determining the overall winners. The tables are divided into male and female and ordered by the points you have accumulated so far over the League. There are a number of divisions between the 2 routes, with runners on the lowest number of points on the top divisions. Each night, points will be awarded based on your finishing place. If you were 56th one night and 67th another night, you would have score of (56+67) = 123 from the two runs. Your scores over your best 8 runs will be included at the end. Every single runner is in with a chance of winning their division, as the points are not based on time, purely on your position on the night. If you improve more than the rest on a particular night you will earn less points and thus a better score. If you improve significantly, it’s possibly that you might ‘move up’ a division also.
Anyone that has run 3 runs to date will be included as they can still make their 8 race target. That’s not to say if you haven’t run 3 races yet that you should drop out! We’ll have prizes across the board on our final night so it’s always worth giving your best!

Baldy Man returns
No, it’s nothing to do with the marauding butcher, instead it’s great to hear that the Baldy Man run has been rescheduled for January 29th. Same time and venue, 12pm Tramore strand. Entries will be taken from 10.30 onwards at the Majestic hotel. All proceeds to the Children’s Hospital Crumlin.

Marshalling anyone?

The demand for marshalls and timekeepers is still high. The more we get the safer it is all round for everyone involved. Suggestions such as running beforehand and informing the timekeepers of your time have been taken on board and are in place for anyone that is available to marshall but would still like to run the course on the night.

Thanks to Cathal, Brian, Con, Des, Declan, Dick, Joe, Alan and anyone I’m forgetting, for last week’s road marshalling duties. If you want to volunteer to help some night, don’t forget that it counts as a race run so that your total number of races will not suffer. Likewise if you know someone that doesn’t want to run but wouldn’t mind getting involved, send them down to us!
