Road Runners Winter League Week 9 , Thursday January 26th, sponsored by:

Glad I'm not a brass monkey!

3 weeks to go
Hard to believe we’re 3 quarters of the way through this year’s winter league. With 3 weeks still to go it’s hard to believe that entries have topped 370. No doubt this will increase again before the end, given that new people are still turning up each Thursday night. It’s a terrific indictment of the potential for everyone to get out, get fit and even have fun. Almost half of those 370 had never run before and are now bonafide runners (that includes those of you that take walk breaks!).

One for the road
Or rather, one for the footpath. Unfortunately we again have to caution runners to run on the footpath. Last Thursday night there were several groups of runners running okn the road after the turning point. One of these runners almost caused a woman to crash and resulted in her giving, quite fairly, a rather large chunk of her mind to one of our marshalls. Neither the driver, nor the marshall deserved for that to happen as it was neither of their faults, but one of yours out there. Will you shoulder the responsibility of someone crashing car because of you? I doubt it, which would mean the end of the Winter League. And while those of you that run on the road flaunt the rules as you’ll probably go out and do your own run anyway, there are people that depend on the league to get them out and motivated to run. So next time you decide to run on the road facing oncoming traffic, ask yourself ‘Do I want to be the one that causes a premature end to the Winter League for almost 400 people?’

Perfect weather for PBs
In case you don’t know the lingo, a PB is a personal best and many of you had one last Thursday night. There wasn’t a puff of wind to slow runners down so most improved over both routes, some dramatically. Some of those were John Carew, as part of a bet to beat a colleague, Fergus O’Connell who is now down to sub 6 minute miles after a steady improvement since before Christmas and Brea Cooke who broke 30mins for the first time this year

2.5 mile improvers
On the shorter route side of things, Mary Power knocked a whopping 4 mins off her time to finish well under 30 mins in 29.21. Conan Gallagher has improved by over 10 minutes since his first run on week 3, dipping under 20mins. Interesting to note that we had 2 Jennifer Dorans, one newbie from last week, and one from day 1 who has improved her time by over 4 minutes. Well done to both!!

League Tables
Keep an eye out for this week’s League table in the lobby of the RSC. Don’t forget that there are a number of divisions, with runners on the lowest number of points, not necessarily the fastest in the top divisions. Your scores over your best 8 runs will be included at the end if you have run more than 8, so if you had a couple of bad runs, make sure to keep coming along so that one of those might be replaced by a better outing. If you improve more than the rest on a particular night you will earn less points and thus a better score. The divisions can change based on whether runners run enough races and movement of runners up and down the ladder.
Anyone that has run 5 runs to date is included as they can still make their 8 race target. That said we have prizes across the board on our final night for a variety of reasons so it’s always worth giving your best!

BB
No, not Big Brother, Big Bus. That’s what Joe’s had to order for Ballycotton because of the huge interest. So, bearing in mind that there are over 4000 entrants and that you cannot drive your car within 10 miles of Ballycotton on the day, in might be worth considering the bus. Just give your name and a 10Euro deposit to Joe Cawley on Thursday night.

Waterford AC presents Spring Series
No doubt you’ve been losing sleep, wondering what’s next after the winter league finishes. Worry no more. Waterford AC will host a 3 race Spring Series over 3 consecutive Sundays starting March 19th. The distance is 5k and entry fee 8Euro per race. You can pre-register for the 3 races however for only 20Euro, at next week’s winter league. There is an array of prizes on offer for each race as well as tea and biccies after in the Waterford Crystal Sports Centre (which is also where entries on the day will be taken). For more information see www.waterfordac.com.
