Waterford Road Runners

Road Runners Winter League Week 1, Thursday November 9th, sponsored by  and

'Well Holy God!'

As Miley says.

Record breaking was what we used to describe the turn out at last year’s first Winter league night. Those 2 words fall a long way short of describing last Thursday night’s turnout. Almost 320 people were registered in under an hour and completed either the 2.2 or 5.2 mile courses. The atmosphere was just electric and it was fantastic to see so many new faces arriving and taking it all in. Well done to all!

Panic stations

The organisers arrived at 6pm to be greeted by some enthusiastic runners waiting to enlist. The queue was soon out the door, down the stairs and out the front door of the RSC. With those unexpected numbers it was all hands on deck for the next hour. After registration, Bobby officially welcomed everyone and got proceedings underway.

And they’re off

The 5.2 milers made their way across the Cork Road first to start their journey around the Cork side of Waterford. With Waterford AC’s new clock and timing system on hand, 200 runners made their way up the Cork Road and kicked off the 2006 League. 5 minutes later another 100 or so ran in the other direction and started their 2.2mile run.

Marathon ladies

Not looking the slightest bit like they’d just completed 26.2 miles the previous Monday were the Dublin Marathon Road Runner crew. Gemma Dewberry, Brenda Lowe, Louise Casey, Ann Fitzgerald, Bernie Power and Honor Lynch to name but a few, all turned up last Thursday and floated around the 5.2 mile course. This could be you in a couple of years time!

Safety matters most

Waterford AC also looked after your safety last Thursday, having plenty of marshalls on hand to supervise both routes. Any comments later were all in favour of the new routes and how well marshalled they were. To continue this, we ask runners to consider giving one up one night of running to help marshall the route or give a much needed hand at the finish line.

Handicaps kick in

As with previous years, after the first night, all other runs (apart from Christmas) will be handicapped, starting tomorrow night. This means that slower runners will start ahead of the speedsters, with the aim being to arrive at the finish line at the same time. Be sure when you arrive for registration tomorrow night that you look up your handicap. Lists of names and the associated handicaps will be posted up around the RSC lobby and upstairs.

Paid up for Full Series yet?

Over 180 of last week’s entrants paid in full for the Series for the very modest sum of €25. With 12 runs to go, you can still sign up this week and next for the full series if haven’t done already. It will still be €25, with the cost for one night at a time just €3. Don’t forger though that even though you’ve paid for the full series you will still need to register each night, i.e. just give your number to whomever’s on the desk.

No sponsors, no fun

No doubt you noticed how well dressed the marshalls and organisers were. Our thanks to AOL for the sponsorship of these viz jackets. They meant all were visible to runners and better still, not frozen to the bone. Our thanks to Alfie Hales Sports and Brooks Running for the bib numbers they supplied. Don’t forget all League participants get 10% off in Alfie Hales. So if you’ve just started running in an old pair of Adidas tennis shoes from John McEnroe’s era, you might consider going along and using their expertise to choose a more appropriate pair from their huge range.
