Road Runners Winter League Week 7, Thursday January 11th, sponsored by  and

'And still they come!'

Even 7 weeks in, we still had 23 newcomers last Thursday joining another 260 runners and joggers. To date almost 600 people have registered since the start of the League. If you’ve been slacking off or haven’t come back since your first night, there’s still plenty of time to return and reap the benefits. Why not try the 2.2 miles if you’re not feeling as fit as you were before Christmas? No excuses, get down to the RSC Thursday evening before 7pm!

 League divisions

This week sees lots of movement up and down the league tables as people improve, do an extra week, or even miss a week. The winners will remain a mystery right until the end! Don’t forget you need to complete 9 runs to have your results count on the league tables. Keep up the good work!

 Moving on up

Last week a lot of 2.2 mile runners made the move up to the longer 5.2 mile route and had no problem doing so. As proof, Maria Walsh taught the others a lesson by flying around in just under 46 minutes. Not far behind Maria was Deirdre Chapman, 2^nd lady for the 2^nd week in a row. This is Dee’s first week dipping under the 8 minute mile barrier and pushed by a bigger handicap from now on, could go sub-40 for the distance. Keep it up Dee! Next home was Bernie Phelan, improving steadily week by week. On the testosterone side of things, Liam Lowe failed to realise a mistake with his handicap and left at zero, bringing him home well ahead of the posse. He’ll know all about it next week though! Newcomer Brendan Mooney had a great first night, hopefully WAC are watching these fast guys and signing them up. Paul Heffernan continued his return to form going well under 40minutes to take 3^rd place on the night.

 Short and sweet

Ladies dominated the 2.2 mile route again, with newcomer Maria Jose storming around the course well ahead of the rest. Looks like our translation of the route worked just fine. 2^nd and 3^rd spots were also given to newcomers, as Veronica Murphy and Nellie Cuddihy battled their way around the track, a mere 2 seconds separating them at the finish. None of the winning men were newcomers which is interesting. Paul Griffin, Nicholas Jacob and David White all improved greatly to take the top spots. That’ll surely help their progression within their division. Well done guys. Great to see one of Ireland’s top veteran sprinters back with us again. Bill Doherty ‘mastered’ the course in 13.44, proving that age is no excuse. Are you listening Gerry?

 Mount Sion Run

If you’ve been wary of moving up to the 5.2 mile distance, why not give it a try on a different playing field, so to speak. Sunday, January 21^st, Attie Jackman and friends present the Mount Sion 5 mile road race. Entries will be taken at the Mount Sion GAA club, which hosts the race finish and refreshments also. Stories have abounded the last 2 years of the copious amounts of food available after the race, so if you’re short a few bob and can’t afford the Sunday Carvery, why not go along and sample some of Helen Jackman’s delicious grub? All proceeds to the Waterford Alzheimer’s association. Further details available Thursday night. Give it a go.
