Road Runners Winter League Week 8, Thursday January 18th, sponsored by  and

Takes more than wind and rain

To put off our gutsy Winter League runners. Last Thursday evening got progressively worse, but still a few runners managed to better their times and still enjoy the night. The League divisions are hotting up now as runners examine all the possibilities of who’s done enough races, who should they be watching out for, who should they lock in the bathroom before! Almost 270 runners are coming along now each week. With a huge 600 runners registered, one wonders what happened all those new years resolutions. It’s still not too late folks, still 4 weeks left!

 Not your average runner

Last week we were missing one of Waterford and Kilkenny’s favourite Vets as he prepared for the National Masters Indoor Championships. Bill Doherty of St.Joseph’s, former hurdler champion, stuck to the flat last Saturday as he claimed victory in the O/45 400m in Nenagh, after winning silver in the 800m. Read the full report on Bill’s performance as well as the Kilkenny team’s win in the Leinster Cross Country last Sunday in Gerry’s St.Senan’s notes.

 The birthday girl!

I won’t upset Helen Walsh by saying what age she turned last Thursday night, suffice to say it was a significant milestone post the National Pension age. Helen, who joined the 2.2 milers a few weeks ago is an inspiration to anyone’s Mum that might be thinking of following her daughter down to the RSC. Rosie Van Der Valk, whose husband and kids all run, added to the family affair by introducing Helen to the Winter League. Check out Mum and daughter’s photo alongside notes.

 No League? No excuses!

In case you thought that the end of the Winter League meant you could stay at home those Thursday nights and forget about running until next November. Think again. Waterford AC and West Waterford AC present their respective Spring Series starting soon. West Waterford kicks off its Michael Roche Carpet Series next Sunday, January 28th with the Colligan Cup run in Colligan Woods. The format will be familiar to all Winter Leaguers, in that it’s a handicapped race. You predict your finish time and start as the clock reaches it. The winner is the person home closest to zero, i.e. the person that most accurately predicted their time. No watches allowed here either for obvious reasons. After that is the Dungarvan 10miler on February 4th, entry forms available on line from WWAC’s website, www.westwaterfordathletics.org. Worth entering early to save yourself €5 and get prepared for Ballycotton. After the Winter League then is the Kilmacthomas 5miler a but closer to home, on Februay 25th. All details on their website, or just ask any of the stewards Thursday night for more information. Continuing on from the success of their Spring Series last year, Waterford AC again present their 3 5k road races, starting in March. Full details from any of the committee, or just check out the 5x3foot poster Thursday night, you can’t miss it!!

 Mount Sion Run

Sunday’s Mount Sion run was a terrific success with almost 200 runners taking part to raise money for Waterford Alzheimer’s Association. Road Runners names were dotted all over the results sheet, so well done to all those that gave it a bash! James Sullivan, Waterford AC’s flying vet, was second to WWAC’s David McCarthy in a time of 26.20. In fact, 50% of the top 10 were O/40, so the next time someone suggests they’re too old to run, you have an argument to get them out the door. Well done to the organisers and runners on a great day out.

Volunteers one and all

Just a reminder that all who take part in helping organise and run the Winter League are there of their own free will (apart from husbands that get dragged along to help of course). They give up their own valuable time, running time more importantly, to help ensure you have an enjoyable and safe run. Between car park attendants, registration ‘engineers’, poster ‘printer-outers’, time keepers, number takers, road marshalls, finish shoot attendants, results compilers and website hosters, there are a lot of bodies involved in keeping things ticking over. Without these people there would be no League, so don’t be afraid to shout the odd word of thanks at the marshalls to combat the abuse they endure from some drivers as they wait a few seconds for runners to safely cross their path. Well done and thanks to all, everyone appreciates your help.

  4 weeks remain

Time to book the babysitter or mother-in-law for February 15th. The last of our runs for 2007 will take place, followed by the now famous hooley and prize giving afterwards. This year, due to the huge increase in numbers, we have reserved Mount Sion GAA club for the night. Wash out those glad rags, no running shorts or tights allowed!
Also, this year, we will have the Evening Herald’s athletics reporter Lindie Naughton on hand to report back to HQ on how well running is doing in the South East. Lindie is very much associated with the Irish Mountain Runners Association (
www.imra.com) and is involved in coaching both those mad mountain runners and normal everyday runners! We are delighted to welcome her to this year’s prizegiving.
