Wilson's Disease

Wilson's Disease is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease that results in the accumulation of free or toxic copper chiefly in the liver, brain and kidneys of affected patients.

It is a disease which affects children, adolescents and young adults. Wilson's Disease is observed with a prevalence of between 1: 30,000 and 1: 100,000 worldwide.

There is excellent treatment available, in the initial stages of the disease with chelating agents such as Penicillamine, Trientine and during the maintenance stage with Galzin (zinc acetate). It is imperative that patients are treated by a Consultant led team with experience of treating Wilson's Disease. There is one such team at the hepatology unit at St. James' Hospital, Dublin led by Dr. Suzanne Norris ( Consultant ).
