This film is based on a
Roman General named Maximus (Russel Crowe) who led a
great roman army that fought the barbarians atthe
beginning of the film which was a nice battle. He is then
wished by the emperor of Rome to make Rome a republic and
make him leader of the republic. But the emperor's son,
who is the bad guy, doesn't want this and he wants to be
the Roman emperor after his father dies. When the emperor's
son finds out, he decides to kill his own father by
strangling him then sentencing Maximus to death and
killing his family making sure that his rule as emperor
would be a sure one. Maximus escapes returns back to
where he and his family lives, but he sees his wife and
son crucified in front of his house. Maximus is then
caught by wealthy merchants and sold off as a gladiator,
to kill for entertainment. His years of fighting as a
gladiator made him know that he could avenge the death of
his family.
The film is very entertaining and
visually stimulating with the computer graphics which
stand out a lot in this film. Blood and guts are a
dominant feature in this film. A part in this film which
I think is really funny is the way he cuts off the heads
of many other gladiators. Russel Crowes acting is not
very good since he makes a stupid grumbling sound
everytime he talks. The films storyline is sometimes
confusing or plain stupid and it can be predictable.
