Friday 11th September 2009.

Festival Opening and Registration: 1.00pm to 1.30pm

Grade II Slieve Gullion

Approx 8km Height Gain: 574m

Route: Killeavy Old Church >Ballard >North Cairn >South Cairn > Slieve Gullion Car Park

 

A huge heather clad bulk of mountain overlooking the South Armagh countryside and encircled by a geologically unique ring of hills known as a Ring Dyke.

 

Saturday 12th September 2009.

Registration: 8.45am

Bus Departs: 9.30am for 3 main walks

 

Grade I Mournes:

Approx 16km Height Gain: 950m

Route: Trassey Car Park >Lukes Mountain >Slievenaglogh >Commedagh >Slieve Donard >Thomas Mountain >Donard Wood >Newcastle

 

This is a strenuous Grade I Walk in the high Mournes with beautiful views over all the peaks and into Newcastle and Dundrum Bay.

 

Grade II Mournes:

Approx 12km Height Gain: 625m

Route: Trassey Car Park >Hare’s Gap >Slieve Bearnagh >Slieve Meelmore > Slieve Meelbeg >Slieve Loughshannagh >Ott Car Park.

 

A most enjoyable walk tracking Northern side of the Mournes onto one of the highest and most rugged peaks in the Mournes

 

Grade II Cooleys:

Approx 12km Height Gain: 600m

Route: Ravensdale Car Park >Clermont Cairn >Cairnawaddy >The Castle > Round Mountain >Lumpers Pub.

 

A Beautiful introduction to the heathery mountains of this area rich in the folklore of Cuchulainn who walked these hills 2000 years ago.

 

 

Grade III

Registration: 11:30 am. Bus departs: 12 noon

Gap of the North History Walk – 5 km

 

The walk starts at Faughart Graveyard, near site of battle in 1318 in which Edward Bruce was killed. Walk continues past St Brigid’s Shrine through the Gap of the North where O’Neill fought Mountjoy in 1600, and on to Moyra Castle and the Kilnasaggart Stone. Walk ends near Jonesborough at the Carrickdale Hotel

 

Sunday 13th September 2009.

Registration: 9.00am

Bus Departs: 9.30am for 3 main walks

 

Grade I Mournes:

Approx 17km Height Gain: 970m

Route: Gamekeeper’s Lodge > Slievenaglogh > Doan > Slieve Loughshannagh > Carn > Slieve Muck > Gamekeeper’s Lodge

 

A very enjoyable and strenuous walk which takes you into the central mountains of the Mournes. On a clear day the views are spectacular with all the encircling Mournes peaks in view.

 

Grade II Mournes:

Approx 12km Height Gain: 700m

Route: Gamekeeper’s Lodge > Loughshannagh > Doan > Carn > Slieve Muck > Gamekeeper’s Lodge

 

An enjoyable walk into the central mountains of the Mournes. Fabulous views on a clear day. Spectacular views into the Southern and Eastern ends of the Mournes.

 

Grade II Cooleys:

Approx 12km Height Gain: 650m

Route: Tain Trail > Barnavave > Slieve Foye > Eagle Rock > Forest Park .Carlingford Village

 

A craggy mountain dominating the Carlingford landscape with a famous ridge stretching 2 kilometres from the head art 589m to the toe at 384m.

 

Grade III

 Registration: 11:30 am. Bus departs: 12 noon

Smuggler’s Walk ( South Armagh border)

 – 4 km, height gain 200 m

The walk starts from Cornamucklagh House (Davey’s Pub). We visit the site of a monastery in the Ferry Wood wiped out by the Vikings in 845, then follow the border stream up through Fathom Wood to Larry Tam’s Loanan where a poet and highwayman came to a bad end. Back by secret lanes and pathways to Cornamucklagh House.

 

You can register for all walks at Killeavy Football Club, Carn Road, (off the Forkhill Road) this includes transport costs. There is no pre-registration required.
