Killarney Methodist Church

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Rev. Laurence Graham is the minister in the church in Killarney.  He also has responsibility for the work in Kenmare.

He, his wife Karen, & children Hope & Paul, live in Killarney.

Prior to July 2008 there was not a full time minister stationed in Killarney (the church being administered from Cork) but, being encouraged by the work being done in Killarney and Kenmare, the Methodist Conference in 2008 agreed that a minister should be stationed in Killarney.

The introduction of Methodism into 'The Kingdom' dates from 1790 when Charles Graham, a native Irish speaker, was appointed missionary in Cork and Kerry.  He was so successful that he won for himself the name of the 'Apostle of Kerry' and by 1796 a small congregation was meeting in Killarney.
Methodist work was also started in Tralee, Milltown, and Killorglin.
The present church in Killarney, built in 1911, is the only surviving Methodist Church building in Kerry.

For many years the church in Killarney was only open during summer month for the use of visitors.  However in the 1990's, due to the energetic and godly ministry of Ed. & Jean Ritchie, pastoral assistants originally connected with the church in Cork, the church, identifying opportunities in the local community, put in place a programme of spiritual and social caring during the week and expanded so much that 2 Sunday worship services became necessary throughout the year.

By 2003 it was apparent that the original church buildings were not adequate for all of the activities taking place during the week and plans were drawn up for an extension at the back of the building.  The new building was tastefully designed to complement the older building, and was officially opened by the President of the Methodist Church in Ireland, Rev. Dr. Brian Fletcher on 21 May 2005.

The church/worship area has been rearranged and the congregation now faces the other way.
These views show the church before worship and the lively scene when the multi-racial congregation of adults and children are present.

Part of the extension area at the back of the church is a coffee dock where members of the congregation join for a cuppa & a chat after worship.
