The History of the West Cork Motorcycle Club
The
West Cork Motorcycle Club was formed in 1997 and has gone from strength to
strength ever since. The club now has over one hundred members each year, not
all of them from West Cork. We also have members from all over Cork City and
county and even a few Kerry members. The aim of our club is to promote
motorcycling in all its aspects, to this aim, we run Vintage events for older
machines, Speed events, off road events, Charity events and many Social events.
At
present, we run three annual Vintage events, these are the Ballinspittle run, which
takes place in June, and the October run, which takes in October, the
Timoleague run which is in July. On the speed events front our club is very
special, at present we are the only club in the country running Drag Races. All
types of bikes can enter and with the help and support of the people of Bandon,
we have to date run five very successful events there. We also run two hill
climbs one in Clonakilty at Twohig's hill for five years, the other is run in
Roberts cove and last year was the first year for this event. Some club
members’, who compete in short circuit racing both here and in the UK, can be
seen in action at both hill climbs and drag races.
Fund raising is also a big part of our club. We raise money for local charities while we are out for our Sunday spin. We hold poker runs during the year and a toy run at Christmas. Last year we raised over 5000 euros for local charities. Add to all this, Fun runs and barbecues, Christmas parties and meetings and you have a very unique club. This club is the only one that incorporates all aspects of motorcycling and caters for bikes and bikers of types and ages!!!
We
have run Grasstrack events including a championship round on the Sunday of the
August Bank Holiday weekend of 2001.
The event gives you a chance to see bikes up close and is a great day
for all the family. This type of event
is ideal for youngsters starting out on their first off road bike. Both girls and boys from age five or six
upwards compete.
In
May we also hold a Motorcycle Exhibition, this takes place in Clonakilty and is
always a great success. It is a great
opportunity to see all types of Motorcycles from yesteryear as well as bikes of
the future. It has become an annual
event growing with the years as the club has done.
