Determined, Well Organised Under 16 Hurler's Outclass Mayfield in League Final (Ballinlough 28/11/04) Whitechurch 1.09 - Mayfield 2.02 "The jinks of Ballinlough was lifted on Sunday morning after the Under 16 hurlers of Whitechurch outclassed a fancied Mayfield Team. First half dominance lead the way to a well deserved victory. Whitechurch held Mayfield scoreless from the 18th minute to the last minute where they hit 2 late goals." Surface conditions were heavy which made it difficult for crisp fast hurling. The opening couple of chances fell to Mayfield but they failed to capitalise. Shane Cahill plucked a couple of high balls from the air and cleared well. The opening score came after 5 minutes following a great clearance from Paul Walsh, the ball eventually falling to Paul O'Sullivan who slotted between the posts. Colm Keane doubled the lead within a minute after Brian Boland cleared the lines in defence. Whitechurch were enjoying a period of dominance in the first quarter and after Colm Keane was fouled on 10 minutes Paul O'Sullivan pointed the resulting free. Shortly after Paul O'Sullivan's individual effort rebounded off the post. Mayfield pointed from a free on 11 minutes. Whitechurch responded after great work from Colm Kean who sent in a super ball across the square where George Osborne finished to the net. Mayfield hit their second point on 18 minutes to leave the scores 1.03 - 0.02. Shane Cahill was again called into action and responded to the cause fielding another high ball to deny Mayfield. Whitechurch backs were on top with the half back line of Sherlock - Scanlon and Boland cutting off the supply to the Mayfield full forward line. Whitechurch upped a gear and pressurised Mayfield for the coming minutes. Whitechurch hit 4 wides a in row before John Scanlon hit a 65 over the bar to get a well deserved score following all the posession. A close in free just before half time which Paul O'Sullivan pointed to leave the scores Whitechurch 1.05 - Mayfield 0.02 at the break. Whitechurch well deserved their 6 point lead at the interval. The second half was just seconds old when Whitechurch were awarded a free from centre field which John Scanlon pointed. The perfect start to the half. Mayfield made a few switches to try and counteract the Whitechurch dominance. Whitechurch full back line of Hegarty - Lee and Walsh were called on and they answered the call, in particular Ian Lee's strenght and big clearances broke the hearts of the Mayfield forwards. Both sides were guilty of missed opportunities from frees and play in the third quarter. It wasn't until the 23rd minute of the second half when the next score registered. Thankfully it was from Whitechurch midfielder Paul O'Sullivan to stretch the lead 1.07 - 0.02. Don Duggan was proving a handfull for Mayfield in winning alot of ball and not giving his marker much space. Mayfield had a goal chance cleared off the line and good combination work between Boland and Sherlock releaved the pressure. The "in form" Colm Keane was fouled 40 yards from goal. The resulting free was uncharacteristically hit wide by Paul O'Sullivan. A fast puck out from Mayfield found Paul O'Sullivan all alone and he pointed at ease to stretch the lead to 9 points 1.08 - 0.02. Dave McCarthy replaced Sean C and Conor McAuliffe replaced Michael Osborne. Colm Keane was again fouled on way to goal and Paul O'Sullivan split the posts to give a 10 point lead. Sean Ryan replaced George Osborne and Anthony O'Sullivan replaced Dylan Burke. On the stroke of full time Mayfield were awarded a free which was sent into the square resulting in a goal following a goal mouth scramble and with the last puck of the game Mayfield goaled for a second time to leave the final score Whitechurch 1.09 - Mayfield 2.02. On the balance of play Whitechurch were far the better team. They were organised, focused and committed to winning. This was a just reward for a team who trained regularly and put in a huge effort throughout the year. To all the players well done and congratulations on winning the League. To the management team of Patsy Hegarty, Robby Boland, Ray Burke and John Scanlon a huge thanks and well done on bringing success to the club. Under-21 City Hurling Final (Ballinlough 20/11/04). Whitechurch 2.06 Delaneys 1.10 "Heartbreak in Ballinlough" It is a bitter bill to take, to loose a final, but to loose by a point is worse. Today's final became the third championship Hurling game where we lost in the last few minutes. As a spectator it is hard to watch and believe, but I can only imagine how hard it must be on players and mentors. It is difficult to be always so close and yet so far. As stated before, that is what sport is all about. There has to be a winner and a looser and I hope our turn at winning will come soon. No words will change the result or comfort the hurt of defeat but well done to all on reaching the final and keeping the Club colours flying. The game itself was played mainly in good spirit, tough and physical (at times over physical) but that is what you expect at his level. Delaneys opened the scoring with a well hit point after 2 minutes. Whitechurch responded through William Casey who pointed from 40 yards. Shortly after Conor Buckley doubled on a Peter O'Driscoll pass into the net. Severe blow to Whitechurch followed after Peter O'Driscoll received a blow to his hand resulting in a dislocated thumb and sidelined for the remainder of the game. Michael Meade came on for Peter. Ian Lee pulled off a great save which resulted in a 65. Delaneys hit 3 unanswered points. 2 from frees and one 65 to leave the sides level after 17 minutes (1.1 0.04). Shortly after following a defensive mix up Delaneys took the lead after full forward blasted over the bar when a goal was on the cards. Perfect response followed on 20 minutes after Brian O' Sullivan soloed through and blasted to the net to regain a 2 point lead. This was typical of Whitechurch on the day as they played in spurts rather than continuously. The 3 Murnane brothers combined well and Brendan shot over the bar. Whitechurch took a 4 point lead following a Colm Sheahan free and all looked well. An inspirational point from Delaneys midfielder Kevin Foley lifted Delaneys, and on the stroke of full time Delaneys leveled with a goal following a goal mouth scramble to leave the scores 2.03 -1.06 at the break. The standard of free taking and side line cutting from both sides in the opening half was first class. Whitechurch backs were under pressure in the opening half but Roy and Patrick O' Driscoll along with Victor O'Sullivan and Chris Murphy were getting the upper hand. It is said the opening 10 minutes of the second half to any game is critical and Whitechurch were definitely on top here and looked good. 3 unanswered points were hit by Whitechurch in this period. One outstanding point from Donacha Murnane, one from Eoin and a free by Colm Sheahan stretched a 3 point lead 2.06 -1.06. Unfortunately this was our last score. On 23 minutes Delaneys were back on level terms following 2 points from frees and one from play. With 6 minutes remaining Whitechurch were let off the hook following a mix up in the full forward line resulted in a clearance when a goal opportunity fell to Delaneys. Derek O' Connor replaced Michael Meade. Whitechurch were awarded a long range free which was hit narrowly wide. It looked like curtains when Delaneys were awarded a 40 yard free out near the side line but uncharacteristically was hit wide. It looked like we were heading for a draw. Into injury time and an unnecessary free was awarded to Delaneys 40 yards out dead centre of the goal. As expected over the bar. 30 seconds were played and Whitechurch failed to equalize and finished runners up yet again. So near and yet so far. It was critical to win this final, and end the year on a high but it was not to be. Again hard luck lads and well done and Thank You for your efforts throughout the year. We look forward to 2005 and hopefully we can go one step further. The team lined out as follows: Ian Lee Roy O' Driscoll - Chris Murphy - Patrick O'Driscoll Patrick Casey - Peter Lynch - Victor O'Sullivan Peter O'Driscoll - Colm Sheahan(0.02) Brian O'Sullivan(1.0) - William Casey(0.01) - Donacha. Under-21 Hurling Championship. Whitechurch 0.15 - Mayfield 0.11(Ballinlough 16/10/2004) "Whitechurch advance to City Final after gritty display against Mayfield". Whitechurch welcomed back Brian O'Sullivan after missing the quarter final clash through injury. Brian started strong and was influential in the opening minutes. Mayfied opened the scoring after 3 minutes from a close in free. Peter Lynch made his presence known early on and the equalising point resulted from a good movement involving Peter, Donacha Murnane and finished off by Michael Meade. The puck outs and clearances from the Mayfield goal keeper were immence all landing over the Whitechurch half back line. However the Whitechurch backs for the second game in a row were solid, but at times gave away unnecessary close in frees, another one of these on the 9th minute to put Mayfield back in front. If Mayfield had a good free taker in the their wing forward Whitechurch were equally matched with our wing forward Peter O'Driscoll who leveled matters on 10 minutes from a 65. Pat Casey and Colm Sheahan were winning their battles and cleared alot of ball under pressure. Conor Buckley put Whitechurch ahead on 13 minutes with a well taken point from a narror angle. Score of the match was the equalising point for Whitechuch on 12 minutes following a superb catch from William Casy who broke free and played on Peter O'Driscoll who blasted over the bar to level the game on 10 points each. Victor O'Sullivan, Roy and Patrick O'Driscoll were dominating the back line and Whitechurch appeared to have taken control of the game mid way through the second half. Whitechurch regained the lead for the first time since the 12 minute of the first half after a Peter O'Driscoll free 0.11 - 0.10. Brendan Murnane replaced Michael Meade after 15 minutes. On 17 minutes Peter pointed a super free on the sideline from 55 yards to stretch the lead to 2 points 0.12 - 0.10. Another very well worked point for Whitechurch came on the 23rd minute following a great move involving Eoin Murnane - William Casey - Peter O'Driscoll and put over the bar by Colm Sheahan to leave 3 points the margin in favour of Whitechurch. Mayfield were awarded a 21 yard free shorthly after which they pointed to leave 2 the margin. Mayfield upped the game for a few minutes but Whitechurch mopped up the pressure very well and Ian Lee pulled off a great save to ensure a clean sheet. Whitechurch cleared lines again and were awarded another close in free which Peter tapped over. Whitechurch were in command and the insurance point came one minute from time from the stick of who else only Peter O'Driscoll from a 60 yard free to leave 4 points the margin 0.15 - 0.11. That was the final score and Whitechurch advace to the final where they meet the winners of the other semi-final between Nemo and Delaneys. This was a game of frees with 8 of 11 for Mayfield and 9 of 15 for Whitechurch. Whitechurch scored 4 point from play with the other 2 from 65s. Whitechurch have improved since the quarter final, however further improvement will be necessary in order to capture the title. Well done to all involved and best of luck in the final. The team lined out as follows: Ian Lee Roy O' Driscoll - Chris Murphy - Patrick O'Driscoll Patrick Casy - Peter Lynch - Victor O'Sullivan Donnacha Murnane - Colm Sheahan(0.01) Brian O'Sullivan - Eoin Murnane - Peter O'Driscoll(0.12)9 frees - 2 from 65s Michael Meade(0.01) - William Casey- Conor Buckley(0.01) Subs: Aidan Harte - Fauud Fawzi - Alfel McEvoy - Alan Corcoran - Brendan Murnane (Michael Meade). |
Under - 21 Hurling Championship. Whitechurch advance to semi-final encounter clash with Mayfield after an emphatic win over Brian Dillons on a score line of 3.09 to 1.02. In what turned out to be a rather uneventfull first half Whitechurch lead at half time on a dismal scoreline of 0.03 - 0.01. The scores for Whitechurch came from Donocha Murnane after 16 minutes, Conor Buckley on 28 and William Casey on 30 minutes. The backs stole the show in the first half with Patrick Casey and Victor O'Sullivan in the half back line dominating. The second half was dominated totally by Whitechuch and points from William Casey and Conor Buckley and a goal from Eoin Murnane set Whitechurch on the road for victory. Donnacha Murnane goaled shortly following a long attempt from 60 yards. 3 minutes later William Casey stretched the lead with a well taken point. On 12 minutes the game was over as a contest after Eoin Murnane goaled for a second time. Michael Meade hit two fantastic points to stretch the lead further. Juvenile County Semi - Final (Tracton Tuesday Sept 21st 6pm) Whitechurch 2.07 - Tracton 2.11 Following the good performance in the semi - final against Tracton, Whitechurch were hopeful for this team to reach the final. Paul O'Sullivan received an injury in the quarter final which ruled him out for the semi final clash. Michael Osborne came in for O'Sullivan and proved to be worthy replacement. In a game which saw Whitechurch loose by 4 points by the eventual county champions, it was a game which could have been won had we got the rub of the green. Whitechurch trailed at half time by a single point 1.05 to 1.06. Dylan Burke was in impressive form hitting the Whitechurch goal in the opening half and also tagging on a couple of points. The Whitechurch backs were solid throughout with Ian Lee well in control. The second half goal came from the stick of captain John Scanlon who hit a long rang shot straight to the net. Mid way through the second half was the turning point when George Osborne blasted against the crossbar and the resulting ball eventually cleared from the line. This fortunate break for Tracton proved to be inspirational and they ran out eventual winners on a score line of 2.11 to 2.07. On the day the better team won and they went on to win the final. We wish to congratulate the U-16 team on reaching the semi - final and thank all involved for their efforts throughout the year. We wish the team success in the final stages of the league campaign. The team beaten in the semi-final lined out as follws: Shane Cahill Ian Lee - Paul Walsh Richard Sherlock - Brian Boland - David Hegarty - John Scanlon - Don Duggan David Kiely - Colm Keane- Michael Osborne Dylan Burke - George Osborne Subs: Sean Ryan - Sean C Burke - Dave McCarthy. |
Juvenile County Quarter Final (Meelin Sunday 05/09/04) Whitechurch 5.12 - St Marks 4.13 Whitechurch hang on in high scoring thriller and advance to County Semi-Final. Once again the uncertainty of how many a side raised its head and delayed the start of the game for a few minutes. It was resolved and 13 a side played. St Marks opened the match in a higher gear to Whitechurch and were getting in good hard blocks, hassling and basically knocking Whitechurch off their stride. Don Duggan on the Whitechurch side was equal to the challange and kept the team alive in the opening minutes. St Marks were first to score from a free from young corner forward Eamon Brosnan. This game was always going to be tricky for Whitechurch Chairman John Brosnan having 3 Nephews involved in the St Marks team. John Scanlon equalised from a free on five minutes, and almost immediately another free for St Marks was tapped over. The first goal of this 9 goal thriller happened on 8 minutes when a 50 yard free for St Marks found its way to the net. Dylan Burke reacted quickly and hit over a fabulous point from play. John Scanlon hit another well taken free, after Don Duggan did the grafting to earn a free which left the scores 1.03 - 0.03. Whitechurch were now on top and starting to settle after the opening slow start. Richard Sherlock hit a precise pass to Colm Keane who tapped over and David Kiely followed with a skillful point from the wing to level the sides after 14 minutes 1.02 - 0.05. Colm Keane caught a mighty ball and passed to the unmarked Dylan Burke who made the space, turned and ran on goal blasting to the net giving the goalkeeper no chance. Whitechchurch well in command of this period leading 1.05 - 1.02. Whitechurch fowling close to goal was penalised by St Marks corner forward who pointed another free. Dylan Burke snap shot on goal was narrowly wide but followed on 17 minutes with another skillful point. Whitechurch allowed St Marks back into the game and squandered vital possession. St Marks tagged another point on 20 minutes to leave just 2 the margin. John Scanlons abilty to cut a side line ball again was evident in Meelin. David Kiely's work rate was out standing and put 3 points the margin after a brillant point. St Marks tagged another 2 points to leave one point the margin and leveled with a long range free on 28 minutes. Hard worker Don Duggan got score of the first half after continous work and dogged determination kicked the ball over the bar to give Whitechurch a single point lead at the break. 1.09 - 1.08. Dream start to the second half as Paul O'Sullivan goaled in the opening minute. St Marks managed to clear a goal mouth scramble but only as far as Colm Keane who was fowled and the close in free was tapped over by Paul O'Sullivan to stretch the lead 2.10 - 1.08. Another chance for Whitechurch to kill the match was turned over by St Marks who upped "the anti" and hung in. Shane Cahill caught some great dropping balls into the square and cleared his lines very well. St Marks goaled a second time following a bad clearance from defence to take St Marks back into the game and give them the initative. Shortly after St Marks centre forward soloed through, hit a blistering shot on goal, which Shane saved well and knocked out for a 65. The 65 fell short and failed to be cleared and St Marks took a one point lead on 12 mins 3.08 - 2.10. Whitechurch fowled and was punished again by the free taking of their corner forward. Now it was Whitechurch's turn to to up "the anti" and they did just that after Dylan Burke hit a cracker of a goal to put Whitechurch back in a 1 point lead. 3.10 - 3.09. St Marks levelled from play and we knew that we were in for an exciting finish. No team were able to pull away sufficiently to put the game out of reach. Goal number 4 for Whitechurch came from the stick of Paul O'Sullivan after a great solo run to give a 3 point lead. David Kiely was picking up some some great loose balls and slotted over a great point on 18 minutes. Whitechurch hit 2 wides from scorable chances. Shane Cahill was put under pressure but was equal to the calling, catching great balls. As one would have expected another twist to game came on 24 minutes when continous goal mouth pressure from St Marks resulted in a goal. The teams were level again on 25 minutes after a great point from St Marks corner forward 4.11 each. Back to the other end went the play and Colm Keane plucked the ball from the air and ran on goal and after a goal mouth scramble George Osborne found the net. St Marks went straight back down the field and Shane Cahill's goal was bombarded but the defence coped well and John Scanlon eventually cleared. Whitechurch were awarded a 50 yard free and calm Scanlon stepped up and pointed a pressure free on the stroke of full time to leave 3 the margin. The game was not over yet and went into injury time. At the rate things were going we were half expecting a St Marks equaliser goal but this was not to be and the final score was a point for St Marks to leave 2 the margin, Whitechurch 5.12 - St Marks 4.13. Whitechurch advace to th semi-final where they will meet the winners of Tracton and Ballyclough. We wish the team continued success. Minor A City Hurling Final (Ballinlough Wednesday 01/09/04) Whitechurch 1.06 - St Finbarrs 3.10 On a wet and dirty evening St Finbarrs advance to the county after defeating Whitechurch by a 10 point margin. The Barrs started the strongest and took a strong early lead. Whitechurch battled bravely but were unable to topple a more evenly balanced Barrs team. This was always going to be a tough assignment for the lads, against the first team from a strong senior club and one must not forget - eight of the starting Whitechurch team were juveniles. In the opening minute Brian O'Sullivan was unlucky not to give Whitechurch the tonic goal start after his close in attempt was blocked by the corner back. It was the Barrs who opened the scoring on 2 minutes from their corner forward with a well taken point from play. The Bars dominated the next 10 minutes hitting a total of 1.02 and a couple of chances wide. Both corner forwards for the Barrs were causing trouble and their centre field were also on top. Whitechurch moved Brian O'Sullivan and Peter O'Driscoll to midfield in an attempt to counteract the Barrs. The Barrs had a lead of 1.04 to no score built up after 15 minutes. Whitechurch started to get into the game and created a few chances which unfortunately did not result in scores. The Barrs replaced their full forward, showing the dominance of young Ian Lee in full back. the killer blow came on 21 minutes when a free landed short which Whitechurch failed to clear adequately and the Barrs capatilised by blasting to the net giving Shane Cahill no chance. Whitechurch registered their first score from a free by Peter O'Driscoll on 24 minutes. John Scanlon was getting the better of his man and was clearing some great balls from defence. The Barrs tagged on another well worked point just before half time to leave the scores 2.05 - 0.01 at the break. Half time substitution saw Ted Vaughan replace Brian Cahill. Like the semi-final against Bishopstown Whitechurch started the second half all fired up and hurled as they are capeable of doing in the opening seven minutes hitting 4 points without reply. Sharp shooter O'Driscoll hit 2 frees in the opening 3 minutes and point of the match came from Brian O'Sullivan after a terrific solo run. Brendan Murnane hit over point number four after a Colm Keane pass. Whitechurch appeared to have control and had the Barrs under pressure until disaster struck and the Barrs goaled against the run of play. This was the turning point of the game and unfortunately all the hard work of the opening 7 minutes was cancelled in one blow. The Barrs lead was now 3.05 - 0.05 and this enabled them to grow in confidence. When things don't go your way it becomes hard to focus and mistakes are made. Whitechurch gave away some unnecesary frees and were penalised on the scoreboard accordingly. Peter O'Driscoll tagged another point from a free after 12 minutes with the Barrs hitting 4 (3 from frees) to leave the scores 3.09 - 0.06. Richard Sherlock replaced Brian Boland in defence and in fairness to the Whitechurch players they battled bravely and attempted to contain their opponents. Personally for me score of the year was hit by Peter O'Driscoll after 23 minutes of the second half. Whitechurch were awarded a 21 yard free near the sideline on the bank side of Ballinlough. What Mikey Sheehy done to Paddy Cullen in 1978 in Croke Park in the football All Ireland, Peter O'Driscoll replicated in hurling. The quickly taken free caught all napping including the referee and the ball ended in the top corner of the net. It is a pity this was not caught on video but congratulations Peter on such a skillful score. The Barrs tagged on another point to leave the scores 3.10 - 1.06. Alan Corcoran replaced Don Duggan in the closing minutes. Both sides missed a couple of chances but the Barrs went on to take their second trophy of the week. Their Junior team defeated Dillons in the Junior final the previous Sunday. To the Whitechurch players and mentors, well done on reaching the final and thanks for the effort put in throughout the year. We wish the Juvenile team the best of luck in the county. Remember 8 of the starting 15 and 7 subs of this minor team are representing Whitechurch in the county section of the juvenile hurling. The team lined out as follows: Shane Cahill John Scanlon - Ian Lee - Michael Quinlan Brian Boland - Jonathan O'Sullivan - Fuad Fawsi Paul O'Sullivan - Pat Casey Don Duggan - Brian O'Sullivan(0.01) - Brian Cahill Colm Keane - Peter O'Driscoll(1.04) - Brendan Murnane(0.01) Subs: David Hegarty - Dylan Burke - Paul Walsh -Michael Osborne - Alan Corcoran(for Don Duggan)- Richard Sherlock(for Brian Boland)- Paul Whooley - David Kiely - Ted Vaughan(for Brian Cahill)- George Osborne - Sean C Burke. |
Juvenile Hurling City Final (Kilcully Sunday 29/08/04) Whitechurch 4.17 - Delaneys 0.01 In a one sided final Whitechurch advance to the county. In what turned out to be a totally one sided game, Whitechurch took a while to settle having hit 7 wides in the opening 6 minutes before opening the scoring by full forward George Osborne who goaled on 7 minutes. John Scanlon pointed a free shortly afterwards and on 10 minutes pointed another free to leave the scores 1.02 to 0.00. Delaneys were creating chances up front but Whitechurch backs were winning the duals. David Hegarty, Richard Sherlock and Brian Boland ensuring early exchanges went in favor of Whitechurch. On 12 minutes John Scanlon pointed another free and immediately at the other end David Kiely intercepted an almost certain Delaneys score. Aided by a breeze Whitechurch were starting to grow in confidence and on 16 minutes Paul O'Sullivan hit over a fantastic point on the run. On the stroke of half time John Scanlon cut a brillant side line ball into the square where Dylan Burke collected and finished to the net to leave the scores 3.08 to 0.00 at half time. This final was over as a contest. Whitechurch started the second half as they finished the first and Michael Osborne pointed after 2 minutes. Colm Keane pointed shortly after and Paul O'Sullivan hit another trade mark point on the run after 6 minutes. Dylan Burke pointed from a very sharp angle on 7 minutes and Paul O'Sullivan hit another on 9 minutes to leave the scores 3.13 to 0.00. Delaneys hit a few wides from scorable chances but were outclassed in all areas of the field. Whitechurch appeared to loose concentration and hit a couple of bad wides. Paul O'Sullivan pointed a close in free on 16 minutes to get the scoring back on track. Dylan Burke and John Scanlon added 2 further points with 10 minutes remaining. Anthony Ronan replaced Sean C Burke and Sean Ryan replaced Colm Keane on 21 minutes. Shortly afterwards the Osborne brothers George and Michael made way for Conor McAuliffe and David McCarthy. Delaneys pointed on 24 minutes through their centre forward. Brian Humphries replaced Paul Walsh on 26 minutes and Sean Ryan hit goal number 4 on 27 minutes after a defensive error. John Scanlon completed the scoring with a free on full time to leave the final score Whitechurch 4.17 - Delaneys 0.01. Even though the scores show this was a forwards night, the backs also played their part with Hegarty, Lee, Walsh, Sherlock, Boland and Kiely answering the cause when asked. We wish the team the best of luck in the county section. The team lined out as follow. Minor A Hurling Semi-Final (Kilcully Thursday 19/08/04) Whitechurch 1.11 - Bishopstown 2.03 Having weathered the storm in the first half from Bishopstown and the weather conditions,Whitechurch dominated the second half to win a hard, physical and tough encounter and book a place in the final against the Barr's. Peter O'Driscoll transfered his free taking skills from the Junior team to the Minor team and opened the scoring for Whitechurch after 2 minutes, hard work by Paul O'Sullivan earned the free. B/Town levelled on 4 minutes from play. The rain began to fall and made conditions difficult. The O'Sullivan brothers combined well with Paul setting up Brian who fired over a great point on the run. Brian was involved in the next score also after a pass to Brian Cahill who slotted over to give a 2 point lead (0.03 - 0.01). The game not helped by the weather became a bit scrappy with both sides missing chances and hitting wides. On 12 minutes Peter O'Driscoll pointed another free. B/Town took command of the game for the next 10 minutes and scored 1.02 without reply, 2 points from frees and a goal from play to lead by 1.03 to 0.04. Whitechurch was finding it difficult to get to terms with certain B/Town players whose physical dominance was causing some problems. Whitechurch made a few positional changes and moved PeterO'Driscoll out from full forward. At this stage of the game B/Town backs were on top. A long range free from John Scanlon saw Colm Keane catch a great high ball and was subsequently fowled on way to goal. Peter O'Driscoll pointed the resulting free to leave the scores 0.05 - 1.03 in favor of B/Town. It seemed as if Whitechurch had survived the B/Town pressure with limited damage until a side line ball crossed into the square was blasted to the net on 24 minutes. No further scores were recorded for the remainder of the half with both sides hitting wides. Whitechurch were slowly getting back into the game and regaining posession in areas where B/Town were dominant. B/Town had a 4 point lead at half time (0.05 - 2.03). What ever Dave McGrath and his fellow selectors said at half time had immediate effect. Whitechurch opened the second half all fired up. Shane Cahill was brought into the action early and coped well. Whitechurch were awarded a close in free, Peter opted to go for goal. The ball was stopped and a goal mouth scramble resulted. From this the ref decided to bash the ball on the 21 yard line which Brian O'Sullivan whipped first time to the back of the net. Game on and Whitechurch heads were lifted. Just a single point behind and Peter shot over a superb point on the sideline betwen the 21 and 14 yard line. Sides were level (1.06 - 2.03) and Whitechurch dominance began. Our back line helped by Ian Lee, Fuad Fawsi, Brian Boland and Michael Quinlan were containing the B/Town forwards, John Scanlons long clearances were very helpful and put the pressure immediately back on B/Town. B/Town scoring chances were limited in the opening 12 minutes of the second half hitting 2 wides one from play and one from a 65. Whitechurch regained the lead after 10 minutes through a well taken free by Peter O'Driscoll and one minute from the same position Peter slotted over another free to give Whitechurch a 2 point lead (1.08 - 2.03). Whitechurch rallied well and our midfield were dominating the exchanges. 2 point leads are dangerous in Whitechurch and we were awarded another free on 15 minutes which Peter pointed. Frustration was setting in on some B/Town players and their full forward received his marching orders for wild pulling across John Scanlon. (No question with the decision). Whitechurch used the extra man well and continued to put pressure on the B/Town backs. Peter hit an 80 yard free wide and following a goal mouth scramble on 24 minutes Brendan Murnane pointed to leave 4 points the margin. Whitechurch remained focused, particularily the backs and following a long goal mouth scramble in the Whitechurch square the seige was lifted and eventually cleared. B/Town hit 2 further wides before PaulO'Sullivan pointed to leave 5 the margin and book our place in the final against the Barr's. Another good rally and Whitechurch stretched the lead to 2 points after Philip O' Connell passed to the unmarked Colm Sheahan who pointed on the stroke of full time.Seanie O'Gorman was introduced for the injured Peter Lynch. It looked as if we were heading for our first final appearance since 1997 until disaster struck on 31 minutes when Dillon' s goaled for a second time to lead by a single point. The original shot was stopped by Conor Buckley but Dillon's reacted faster on the follow up and raised the green flag. Dillon' s were awarded a free from the resulting puck out which they pointed.
