GRANUAILE's tender arrives at Wicklow port .

25/09/06

Commissioners of Irish Lights GRANUAILE with a Lanby in tow motors into Wicklow bay on a dull Monday afternoon , the ship departed a short time later resuming her passage south , Lanby's  are automatic lights that replaced manned lightships in the mid 1970s , it's possible that the lanby was destined for the Arklow bank , there is another one off Wicklow on the Codling bank , it's visible with binocular's on a clear day from Wicklow head. I remember as a kid looking at the  lightship through a telescope from the head with her red hull and CODLING painted in white on her side.

The ' SARAH '

A coaster leaving the harbour recently helped to uncover the ribs and remains of a ship on the strand , in a area known as the SARAH rocks at Wicklow harbour , l believe (open to correction ) the ship SARAH was sunk here to provide a break water many years ago and the timbers might be from that old sailing vessel!
